YouTube video clip (from Alex Swenson, former D1 coach/scout/recruiter) describing the physical and skill profile college Division‑1 shortstops should have while still in high school. Emphasizes defensive dependability (range, hands, feet), an above‑average arm, good running speed ("six, nine and below"), consistent batting average, and some power — with defense presented as the top priority.

What Does a Division 1 shortstop look like in high school? And this is coming from a former Division 1 college coach, Scout and recruiter that would look for high school shortstops all of the time because we had to be strong up the middle. If we're not strong up the middle, we're not going to have a very strong team. And what we're looking for is a dependable defender. All right? That is so important because why the majority of balls are hit up the middle or in that range. We need a guy that is consistently making those plays, that has a range in the holes, that has range up the middle, that has good hands and good feet. Why are those important? Because it makes them consistent at making those plays and an above average arm so we can get the ball across to keep those guys off of first base, to keep those opponents off. They also run well, six, nine and below. They hit for average consistently. All right. They have some power. But the most important thing, you got to be able to defend. Good luck.
