How to be Respected, Liked, & a Leader

Alex Swenson’s short self-development video gives practical advice on how to become respected, liked, and a good leader. He argues the two pillars are relationships (be genuine, selfless, mentor others) and performance (work hard/smart, be coachable), illustrates with Derek Jeter as an example, and closes with actionable daily habits and a call to subscribe.

Hey, team. Alex Swenson here. Hey, thanks for joining me today. I'm super excited to be talking about this topic today because it improves ourselves not only on the field, but off. You can apply this to anything in your life. So if you get anything from this video, please click that thumbs up, that like, button and subscribe. I put out a weekly video on recruiting, as some of you guys may know, but also self development, which is kind of what we're going to be talking about today, and how to improve ourselves on the field. I hope you enjoy. We're going to be talking about being respected, being liked, and being a good leader. And how do we do that? Right? How do we be respected, be liked, and be a good leader? Well, it starts with two things, all right? Two of the most important things. When we want those three things, it's relationships and performance. First things first. Invest in your relationships. So how do you do that? Develop your relationships. And how do you do that? Be genuine and care about others. It's so important. Don't focus on yourself. The people that are respected, liked and lead are very selfless. They get their attention away from themselves and they focus on other people. They help other people, they care about other people, and they don't expect anything in return. Think of a player or a person similar to your age, doesn't even have to be athletic that you respect and like, and that might also lead as well. What qualities do you like about them? Observe that, right? And then also think about people that you do not respect or you do not like. What qualities that do they have that you don't want to emulate? Think about, because those are important questions. I can think of a good example for this, all right? That a player that you may know, his name is Derek Jeter, retired now. Okay. If you don't know him, you need to look him up, okay? He's an important player in baseball history because of everything that he's done. And he wasn't even the most athletic guy, but he really, really performed. And we're going to get into that here in a second. But he was respected, he was liked, and he was a leader. Okay? Yeah, And I get it. Not everybody liked him. And that's an important note because not everybody's going to like you. Going through life, you can't satisfy everybody, all right? You just got to follow good values and just be a good person going forward, and that's all you can do. Okay? But Derek Jeter, from a baseball sense and was a perfect example of this, of being respected, liked And a leader. Why? Because he had great relationships with his players and even players amongst the league. Okay. And the coaches. And he also performed really, really well. We're going to get into performance here in one second, but before we do, here's the thing. When you hear respected, liked and especially leader, you may feel like you have to do everything. Okay? And that can almost feel overwhelming in itself. But a good leader doesn't do everything, doesn't lead everything. He allows other people to lead when appropriate. And of course there is a balance to all of this, right? Because if you let everybody else do the leading, then you're not the leader, right? You need to be stepping up and volunteering for things. You need to be volunteered for the hardest things. But then when an opportunity presents itself, maybe for a younger guy, a younger girl, younger person to, to step up and lead, let them lead and then mentor them through that's building relationships here. In regards to performance, it is very simple and this is going to be short and quick. Be good at what you do. So how do we be good at what we do? Work hard, work smart. Show up, show up early, stay late, get after it. Never lose focus on performance. Seek out knowledge. Be coachable. Try to bring in as much as you can and be a filter. Take the good and leave the bad, okay? That is part of learning. You're going to be your own best coach as you go through this process. And I promise you, if you do all the things that I just mentioned, your performance is going to skyrocket. No doubt about it. And you're going to be respected and you're going to be liked. If you are improving your relationships and being selfless and really caring about others and then also working hard. And again, everything that we talked about, your performance is going to go up and you're going to be a great leader and a great role model going forward. Hey, this was a short and sweet video, but something that is so important that you can work on on a daily basis. Every day is a training day. It doesn't always have to be physical, okay? Getting your reps in. It can be mental, it can be self awareness, it begin. It can be situational awareness. How would you react to certain things? How can you be more respected, more liked and a better leader? Again, thanks for staying this long. If you got anything from this video, please select that like and subscribe button and share it and I'll see you in the next video.
