Alex Swenson (YouTube) explains how to decide whether to attend sports camps or showcases to avoid wasting money. He defines a camp (school-run, single-school attendance) versus a showcase (third-party event with multiple schools), then gives practical selection criteria: prefer full-day events (ideally two days) with games, verify that attending schools/coaches are decision-makers and that the school needs your position and matches athletic standards.

Camps and showcases. You get invites all the time of come to this and come to that. It's hard to filter through all this stuff and what's worth it, what's not. Well, in today's video, we're going to be talking about the things to look out for to help you make the best decision of whether you should go to that camp or showcase. So first off, what's the difference between a camp and a showcase? A camp is school specific. So a school invites you to their camp on their campus and typically it's only that school that's going to be there and scouting, all of that. And the things that you're going to want to look for is that it's at least one full day. Not like a two hour thing or a four hour thing thing. We want a full day to be in front of these college coaches, preferably two days with games. So you're going to want to look for that. Also is that school in need of your position in your class? If you don't know, you need to ask. Okay. And you need to find out. Also take a look at their athletic standards. At your position, do you fit? Are you on the path to get to that athletic standard to make sure it's realistic? Then there's showcases. Showcases are third parties that bring in college coaches and we need to know the schools that are going to be there and then also the coaches that are going to be there, are they the decision makers, not the volunteer or the intern? And then we're going to also want to look for at least one full day, definitely two full days, preferably with games. You got to have games at showcases because college coaches need to see you in game and then also in a pro style. So look for those things. Good luck.
