A short YouTube advice video by Alex Swenson (uploaded March 26, 2025) that explains how high school athletes can still earn college recruiting offers despite the disruption caused by the transfer portal. Swenson emphasizes proactive self-promotion (highlight video, targeted exposure), strong academics, and attending events where college coaches who recruit your position will see you in person.

It's no secret that the transfer portal has changed everything. And it's made it harder than ever for high school athletes to get offers to be recruited to play in college at a high level. But the good news is there is a path forward for the high school athletes who know how to navigate this new landscape of recruiting, which is ever changing. And we're seeing it all the time. You see it with commitments of high school athletes. So high school athletes are being committed at the next level. It's just harder. There's lower roster spots as far as the number of high school athletes they're bringing in. But if you position yourself the right way and find that fit athletically, academically, and you look in the right places, there is a path for you. The thing is, you just have to be proactive about this. You have to get your name out there. College coaches cannot recruit players they don't know about. All right? And you have to know where to to look. All right. You also have to prove that you can play at a high level. Well, how do you do that? It starts with a good highlight video, 30 seconds to 60 seconds, showing your best qualities as a player. High academics helps a lot because it separates you from the other athletes that are similar to you but don't have as high of grades. Going through this and then from an exposure, they're going to have to see you at some point, live in person. You need to be able to do that. Sometimes these big tournaments or big combines are not the best because you don't know who's going to be there. You need to go to places where you know those college coaches are going to be there. It can be either at their camp, make sure they're recruiting for your position in your class, or it can be at a showcase. Make sure that it's the recruiting coordinator or the head coach there. Good luck.
