Alex Swenson breaks down which baseball positions D1 programs recruit hardest: pitchers, catchers, shortstops, and center fielders. These spots matter most because those players are athletic enough to move around the field. Corner guys still get recruited but mainly for power.

These are the most popular positions that college scouts recruit at the high school level. Now, as a former college coach and scout, we would have a saying that we would talk about a lot and still they talk about today is recruit strong up the middle. Recruit up the middle. What exactly does that mean? The positions that are up the middle of the field. Because if you are strong in the middle of the field, you are going to be likely a very strong team. So what are the positions in the middle field? Think about it. Pitchers, catchers, middle infielders. In particular shortstops and center fielders. Those are the most popular positions. And why is that the case? Because typically, if you recruit a lot of those, shortstops can move to other positions because they're super athletic, same as center fielders. So if you're a shortstop, you can move over to second base or third base. Now, if you're a center fielder and there's a bunch of you, and let the best man win at these positions, they can move to right field or left field. And if you're a corner guy, don't worry, they still recruit you. There's not as much. You got to be able to really bang it for power.
