A brief YouTube explanation (by Alex Swenson) distinguishing a preferred walk-on from a true walk-on in college athletics: a preferred walk-on is recruited and offered a roster spot without athletic scholarship, while a true walk-on gains admission independently and tries out for the team. The speaker advises verifying whether a school holds tryouts.

What's the difference between a preferred walk on versus a walk on? There's a pretty big difference at the college athletic level. A preferred walk on goes through the college recruiting process. They get recruited by the school, they get an offer from the school. There's just no athletic aid, there's no athletic scholarship, but you're just as part of that recruiting class and that team going into that year. Okay? And now a walk on is a player that doesn't get recruited from the school, but they get into the school academically and go through the application process all on their own and they try out for the team. Okay? And they make the team. They would be considered a true walk on. All right? They, they, they didn't get an offer. There was no interest there. And then they tried out for the team and they made it. Now, the thing is, check with the schools because not all schools have tryouts, okay? So if you're going to go in, make sure that they have a tryout. Good luck.
