TOP 15 D1 Mid-Major Baseball Programs

Alex Swenson ranks the top 15 Division I mid-major baseball programs and argues why athletes should consider them over Power 5 schools. Mid-majors offer less over-recruitment, tighter teams, and real chances to play and turn pro. Several have beaten Power 5 teams in recent years.

Hey team Alex here. Thanks for joining me. And in today's video I want to talk about how important it is to target mid major programs and not just Power 5 programs because this can help your chances of playing at the next level so much. And it's not only about going after mid major programs, it's really about finding the best college fit for you athletically and then of course academically, geographically, socially, financially, all of those things. But today I just want to make sure it highlights some of the great mid major programs that you might not have heard of and some of you will have if you're really playing paying close attention on these college programs. But I want to go over why you should target mid major programs and not only mid major programs, but D2 programs, D3 programs, NAI JUCO again, giving yourself the best chance to play at the next level. So let's talk a little bit about this. So mid major programs, for whatever reason, I've heard this before from athletes and players. It's like oh well it's like a mid major program. Like it's like not competitive versus a Power 5 school in the SEC or ACC guys. Mid major programs are very, very competitive and compete and beat Power 5 schools every single year. I mean Coastal Carolina, who's a top 15 mid major program, won the college World series a few years back. Also great facilities at these programs. 90% less of over recruitment. You guys might or might not know, but over recruitment happens at the Power 5 schools. It's just kind of the way it is right now in the landscape and there's a lot of factors involved with why that is. But ultimately it's not good for the athlete that's coming into the program because it almost turns into a tryout and you're not really on the team until you have proven yourself and that you can add value. Especially if there's 40, 50, 60 guys there at the fall. That's a really tough position and it's just so competitive. There's so many amazing athletes at the Power 5 programs. That's really tough for to contribute sooner. So better chance to contribute sooner at a mid major program. Not that they're not as competitive but they're just, it's more family like honestly you are, you are close knit. Not that Power 5 schools are not, but it's just harder because they're bigger schools, bigger programs, etc. It's got a little bit more of a pro ball feel to it where the mid major programs just a closer knit program. From my experience coaching and Playing at them. So playing competitive schedules. Like I said, Power 5 school is very competitive. You got a chance to win a national championship every single year. It's not like football where you have a mid major one aa, you're not winning a national championship. It's going to be probably one of those Power 5 schools where college baseball, mid major Division 1 programs got a chance to win a college World series every single year. So consider that and let's dive into the top 15 programs, mid major programs at division one. And the first one, and I should caveat is I've put this list together based off the last few years of how these college programs have been doing. So a little bit historic but not like just last year, but really like the last five to eight years that they've been doing and definitely some newcomers that have been here as of the last few years. So let's get into number one, East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. I mean just an amazing program has always historically been really, really good and it's been so close to the College World Series. Hopefully they get there soon. I'm rooting for them. And then we got the University of Southern Mississippi. Unbelievable. Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Really, really good program. We played them when I was at Ole Miss and just super, super competitive. Really, really good baseball. Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas, I played them when I was actually playing. Very good program there in Dallas. And not to mention all these schools get guys drafted out of their programs each and every year. The University of Connecticut, great program might surprise some of you guys, but they have a great program and doing great things up there in Connecticut. Number five, of course, Coastal Carolina University, but you know, been down just a little bit over the last couple years. Not like terrible, but they are definitely a top five mid major program as of recently. And then University of California Santa Barbara doing a great job over there. They're competing and going into regionals each every year. Super regionals. Right after that we got Fullerton, very historic program. Augie Garrido coached there. Again, just a good program as we go. Campbell University is just doing a great job there. Alright, so fun fact about Campbell University, they just put out a post that I think they had 12 to 13 guys throwing over 92 miles an hour consistently. And then even I think three or four of them were 94, 95 consistently. So I'm talking about, hey, this is mid major baseball. Mid major baseball is legit. There is serious players and they are serious contenders as far as making a big impact in college baseball and competing Power 5 schools. So Louisiana Tech University, man, great facilities down there and they're competing time and time again each year. Gonzaga up in Washington, if you would notice. Man, look at these. And this was not, I didn't mean to do this but you look at all across like where they are, North Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, Connecticut, all around the map in the us California of course up now Washington with Gonzaga. Liberty University in Virginia, unbelievable facilities. They've really come on the scene the last few years and they're again doing a great job there. They're going to be strong for a long time. University of Houston in Texas, outstanding program. Florida Atlantic coach McCormick over there, man, he's been doing it a long time and they are, they are competing and having high winning seasons each and every year. Central Michigan University that come on recently, like Campbell really man, surprised a lot of people how far they went last year in the playoffs and had some thumpers guys on the bump that were throwing it gas. 95, 96, 97 miles an hour. And here on the 15th, Missouri State University. I played against them and coached against them when I was coaching and playing. Historically they've just been so good and so well coached over there for man really the last 15 years. And I'm thinking about putting a list of 50 top mid major programs because the thing is the majority of Division 1 programs are mid major programs. You think about the Power 5 schools, they are really about like I don't know, around 80, 80, 80 schools right around, give or take a 10 or so there. So there's 80 programs where there's almost 300 Division 1 programs. So there's a lot of mid majors. And I'm thinking thinking about putting 50 of the top mid major programs together. Let me know if you guys are interested in that. And hey, if you got anything from this video, please smash that like button that thumbs up and subscribe to my channel.
