Alex Swenson, a former D1 coach and scout, says college coaches care most about hitability: consistent hard contact and quality at-bats through plate discipline, not just isolated high exit velocities. Power expectations shift by position. Players should know their offensive identity and hit with confidence.

What does a Division 1 coach look for in a high school hitter when we're going through this college recruiting process? And this is coming from a former Division 1 college coach, Scout and recruiter who talks to these college coaches on a weekly basis. And the number one thing is your hitability. How consistent are you at hitting the ball hard? Very, very important. This takes plate discipline, alright? Swinging at good pitches. And don't be so focused on your exit velocity and things like that and being flashy. I much rather have a guy that hits 90 from an exit velocity standpoint and consistently hits the rather than a guy that hits 100x of velocity but strikes out four out of the five. Time pops up a lot. I want somebody that is consistent at hitting the ball hard and having quality at bats. Now, from a power output standpoint, if you're a corner guy, first base, third base, sometimes outfield, we're going to look for a little bit more power. If you're a center fielder, second base or catcher, not that much. All right. And know your identity as a player, as a hitter. Okay. Don't be somebody that you're not and have confidence up there.
