Alex Swenson, speaking from experience as a former Division I coach, scout and recruiter, explains what college recruiters seek in high-school shortstops/middle infielders: foremost a reliable defender; plus speed (ideally 6.9 or below), the ability to hit for average and some power, athleticism (range, good hands/feet), and an aggressive, loose approach on the middle infield.

What does a college recruiter look for in a high school shortstop or middle infielder? And as a former Division I college coach, scout and recruiter, that talks to these college coaches as well. This is not discussed enough. And that is a reliable defender. You have to be a reliable defender to play at the next level. And there's other things, of course, that we want and look for, and some things like that. You got to be able to run well, all right. You got to be able to hit. Being a shortstop at the next level, they are usually the most athletic kids on the field, and they do everything pretty good, and the great ones do everything really, really good, and they do it consistently. So you got to be able to run well six, nine or below. You got to be able to hit for average. You got to be able to hit for some power as you go. And you got to have some range up the middle with good hands and good feet. Hey, make sure if you're a middle infielder, play loose and play aggressive up there, up the middle. That's what we're looking for.
