Teachers need to show up emotionally, not just intellectually. Students can tell when you're holding back, and they need both your knowledge and your care to actually learn.

As I said before, you're a surrogate mother and a surrogate father to a lot of these kids, and they're looking to you not just for education but for inspiration. They want to know that you care about them. They want to know that you love them. And one of the things that I have found when I go and do leadership workshops for educators is that most educators, they lead with their brain, with their mind, with their education, and they leave their hearts at home. But you're dealing with a generation of students that can tell the difference.
