Government Leadership Workshop Part 5 How to build a leadership legacy.

A leadership legacy rests on measurable results, not goodwill. The speaker uses his motorcycle rally business to show why leaders must track profit margins, bank balances, and lives changed. Organizations replace those who don't deliver the numbers.

Leadership productivity. Now let's consider that you have the power of leadership, but do you understand the productivity of leadership? To build and leave a leadership legacy, you must engage in leadership productivity. What does that mean? That means it's all about being productive. That means it's all about the numbers. It's all about— it's all about the change. Like you were employed So that they can benefit from you, right? You— they didn't employ you just to pay your bills. They employ you so that you can help the company pay its bills. They employ you so that they can use your gift, use your talent, and use your skill to help the company do more and do better. So it's about productivity. Always keep your eyes on the prize. Keep your eyes on the ball. Keep your eyes on what it's really about. Don't lose focus on what you're really there for, because if you're not being productive, they will replace you. They will move you around and find someone who can be productive. It's all about being productive. In my, in my businesses, I, I'm about being productive. Like, I want to see the numbers. I want to see the profit margin. I want to see the testimonies. I want to see the lives being changed. I want to see what we benefit. I want to see the bank account. I want to see the numbers because it's about productivity. That's right. Because we're not working for a nonprofit agency, we're working for a for-profit agency that is impacting the lives of others, and, and we want to do some things to benefit this company so that we can impact more lives. That's just the bottom line. That's how it works. It took me a long time to come to that. Right. It took me a long time to realize that. I, I'm a part of this business that me and 3 of my friends started And what we do is we host motorcycle events, like big bike rallies. And it's a passion of ours, it's a passion of mine because I ride a Harley as a little hobby. And we bring in hundreds and hundreds and sometimes thousands of people from around Florida to our rallies, and we, we make money, right? Like, I'm not just trying to have a good day out ride. I'm trying to get paid. I'm trying to go to the bank. Look at your neighbor and tell them, I'm trying to go to the bank with him. I'm trying to go to the bank. And the issue that we run into sometimes is that one of the partners is not always focused on the profits, and they get a little annoyed with me because that's the only thing I'm focused on. That's the only thing I'm focused on. I'm about being productive. Sometimes they're satisfied with people walking up to them, patting them on the back, and saying, oh man, we had a great time. I'm glad we came in from Miami. I'm glad we came in from Tampa. I'm glad we came in from Daytona. I'm glad we came in from Orlando. We had a great time. Everybody enjoyed themselves and thank you, everything was wonderful, then they leave and go home. And some of them, they're okay with that. And that bothers me because accomplished people doesn't settle for compliments. Accomplished people settle for deposits. It's always about productivity. If I want to just have fun, I got other ways I could just have fun. I can have fun all by myself. Amen. But when I come and put my money involved and put my time involved, I'm focused on productivity, and that's all I'm focused on. And sometimes they say, well, Rico, that's all you talk about is how much money we make. That's all I care about. I'm just being honest with you. And you need somebody around you that's going to remind you of the fact that it's about productivity. You need somebody around you that's going to tell you we got a timeline to make. You need somebody around you that's going to tell you that we don't want to get sidetracked here. You need somebody around you that's going to keep you going to the bank. You need somebody around you that's going to keep you climbing up the corporate ladder. You need people around you that's going to remind you of what it's really about. You need people around you that can constantly whisper in your ear and tell you that those who are up there, they're watching you, they're looking at the numbers, they're doing an evaluation. They're calling meetings and they want to know what level of productivity do you have to show for your department. You need that. You need somebody to remind you if you lose focus of that. And when you're in leadership and you want to build a legacy, what speaks volumes in terms of your leadership ability are the numbers you're producing, the lives you are changing, the change you're making, and the people you're helping. Is it about having fun? Yes. Is it about being able to enjoy yourself? Yes. But is it about keeping the numbers growing, you better bet your bottom dollar on it. It is. And that's important to your promotion. Say this with me: productivity matters when you're in leadership. I think I got 2 more.
