Speaker A shares his first sermon about surviving a back operation, brain aneurysm, and recovery he credits to God, drawing parallels to Mark 5:25-34, the story of a woman healed by touching Jesus' garment. Reverend Ivan Theodore Harris and the congregation affirm his testimony throughout the service.
Chapters
They said I'd never walk again, but God brought me through on that. Had operation on my back, and God just moved me through on that one. And then recently I had another accident, aneurysm in my head. And hopefully I'll talk about that when I get into my sermon. But they, they told me that I was going to die then. And my wife said, said, I know somebody else. And so they They kept operating, pulled this down and opened up my head totally. But they put it all back together, but I'm still moving in a special way. And what God is doing, I just thank God that he brought me from a mighty long way.
Amen.
And, uh, this will be my first time preaching.
My God.
I haven't preached since I've been in the hospital. I haven't preached since I've been in the church first of the year. I've been going back and forth, and I just started going every Sunday about about 3 Sundays ago, 3 months ago. And so they've been— I've been going, and I couldn't drive a car, I couldn't do this, but now I'm able to drive a car. So praise the Lord for that.
Amen.
Amen. And, and I talked— your pastor, he knew what I was going through. And I called him once I got the number and told him. I only talk to the preachers who I know will pray for me.
Amen.
'Cause all preachers, all pastors don't do the same thing. Some of them wanted to come to my church and just take over. You know what happened? Me and my wife, my wife pulled so much together. She preached for me, get others to preach for me on Sunday morning. That, that has been so great as to what she's doing and what my church is doing in a special way. And, and, and when— And when your pastor found out I was coming up here, he said, you gonna preach. He wanted me to come up and preach for him. I said, with God's help, I'm going to do just that. So I think, I think let's, let's give your pastor a hand, the bishop. Let's give him some standing ovation. He's a great young man, great preacher, great leader, and I thank God for him. Great young man.
Amen. Amen.
And, uh, he'll be coming down next month, uh, to preach for me. And, uh, so I thank God for that. And my people, they know that he is coming. And I thank God for his wife who takes over when he's not here. She does everything.
Amen.
I'm gonna try, I'm gonna try not to be long. And, um, so y'all, y'all pray for me that God would give me, uh, this sermon that we're looking at. And now what I want us to read from Mark chapter 5 Let's read together verses 25 through, and we'll stop at verse 34. Amen. We want to start together at, at verse 25, and we'll stop at verse 34, Mark chapter 5. Now if we're there, let's say amen. Amen. Oh, oh, he got it up there. All right, ready, set, read. I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood dried up, and it developed in her body, and she was healed of that plague. And Jesus immediately, knowing in himself that the virgin had gone out of him, turned to them about in the press, and said, Glory to God. Amen. Let us bow our heads. Father, we thank you. Allow me to come with a word that will help all of us, and I thank you now for what you're going to do. It's in Jesus' name I pray. Amen. You may be seated. Let me just play this song.
Hallelujah and the glory. Hallelujah. Amen. Hallelujah. Hallelujah and glory. Revive us again. Revive us. Revive us again. Help me say that. Revive us again.
Revive us again.
Oh yeah! Amen.
Revive us again. It said, and a certain woman which had an issue of blood 12 years— I want to talk for a moment God is able.
God is able. Jesus is able. In our text tonight, I am so appreciative to know that the God that we serve, that he is able.
And before this particular chapter takes place, Jesus had Just came into the city. He had an issue with a young boy, a young man who lived in a place where he just constantly did things under anybody, what— and what he wanted to do. But when Jesus entered in there, he told him, he said, What's your name? And he said, well, my name is Legion. And then he said, well, uh, uh, we are— who, who you made of? He said, we are made up of 2,000 people. And so, my brothers and sisters, he allowed that young boy to get back on the right scope because he healed him. and told him to go home and let them know what I'd done for you. And then after that, he— Jesus went over, cast another plane to the other side. And when he came in, he wanted to let people know who he was. And then as he went through, because a young man told him to come down because my daughter is about to die. She's 12 years old. And so as he started to where the young girl was and where he stayed and his daughter stayed, there was a young lady who'd been suffering for 12 years. Isn't that what it said?
12 years.
12 years. In verse In verse 25, and a certain woman which had an issue of blood 12 years—
Lord have mercy.
And, and, and she tried, go through many doctors trying to be healed of what she had. And as she went to these places trying to be healed because she was bleeding for 12 years. Isn't that something? 12 years. And by, by the time that Jesus got there, she said, well, uh, she heard about Jesus. So evidently, let, let us know that she knew something about the Lord.
Yes.
And as she made her way there, the Bible said If I can just touch just some of his clothes, I shall be made, uh-huh, whole. And so there were so many people trying to see Jesus, tried to meet out where he was, trying to get out where he was. The crowd was filled wherever he was. There were a lot of people there. Isn't that, isn't that like some of us today? We, we can go other places, spend this and spend that, and rather go on to Jesus, and, and it did not come out to your prevail. And so as she heard about the Lord and all of the people were there, she got down on her knees And when she got down on her knees trying to get to the Lord, I, I can see her now by faith. I can see her by faith now moving, trying to get where Jesus was. And, and, and the more she tried to get there, the people did not move from where they were. But this young lady got in her mind, said, well, if I can get to him, I don't need to do a lot of things if I can just touch the hem of his garment, or where, where his clothes were. And my brothers and sisters, she finally got to where the Lord was.
Touch.
His clothes, and she became— she was healed right then. The Bible said that, that she stopped bleeding after 12 years. She should have been dead after 12 years bleeding. The Bible said the moment she touched Jesus, isn't that what it said? And, and, but Jesus said, uh, who touched me? And, but you know how his disciples were, and you got people in the church, uh-huh, who, who, who, who don't want to believe Even now today, a lot of us, a lot of people today don't want to believe what happened to me. I'm talking, I'm talking about right in the church. They don't believe what happened to Ivan Theodore Harris. Even in 2009 when I was being operated on then, A lot of them came up, but they did not believe that anything was going to be all right. And, and, and as, as things happened in 2009, surgery lasted 7 hours instead of 2 hours. But you got to know how to pray. And, and when they came up, even some of my— one of my daughters Say, Ma, I know about, I know about that kind of surgery. And my, my wife looked at my youngest daughter and said, listen, leave right now. If you don't believe, do not come to where your daddy is. So she, she said, she said, okay, Ma, I believe, I believe. But my wife was so serious about it. If you don't believe what's going to happen to your father and to Reverend Harris, you need to stop praying right now.
Amen.
And then this young lady touched Jesus. And then some of his disciples, look what they said in verse 30, 31, said, well, all these folks around, You gonna ask who touched you? And the Lord said, yeah, somebody touched me because this is an unusual touch.
Come on.
She was seriously concerned because she had been healed by touching Jesus. Good God have mercy. And the Lord said, no, no, this was an unusual touch. And brothers and sisters, we got to have, even right now in 2016, we got to have an unusual belief of what God is going to do.
Amen.
Well, I feel pretty good myself now. So, and so, as, as Jesus— well, this is an unusual touch by this person who touched me. And, and, and she said, well, uh, she looked at Jesus, came to him and said, uh, look at, look at verse 30. See verse 36? And, and she came to the Lord And and she talked the whole truth. She said, and when she talked the whole truth, Jesus looked at her and said, "Daughter, thy faith has made thee whole." And and when Jesus said that to her. He said, go now, your faith has made you whole. And once we believe that, even now today, if we believe whatever we're going through, you got to believe that God will see you through.
Amen.
What, what, whatever you may be experiencing Whatever you may be going through, you got to believe that God will come and and and he'll come to your rescue. He'll come to your rescue today. He'll come to your rescue tonight. Whatever you may be going through, you may be experiencing, you got to believe by faith. That God, he will see you through.
Yes, sir.
And just a few days ago, when I was in Hampton in the hospital, the Lord came to my rescue. And when he came through, My rescue.
My wife told me, Harris, there's something that you went through.
She said, but if you believe in God, that he will come to your rescue. And there was something that I went through, and, and, but the Lord, he answering my prayer. Amen. Even now tonight, the Lord is still answering my prayer. And you got to believe tonight that this is my first noted aha prayer here tonight.
But I've been talking to the Lord down Down, down on my knees, and I still believe that the Lord is answering prayer. Yes, Lord, I believe that the Lord is answering prayer on my rescue. And I don't know about you tonight, but I'm so glad I'm here. Why are you here at this church tonight? Well, because the Lord, he blessed me when I was in the hospital. Yes, Lord. Yes, Lord. And I supposedly came home 5 days before Christmas, but as I was walking in the hospital, Blood. I stopped bleeding on my right leg, and they had to put me back in a lay-down situation. And but I still trusted God. It was five days later that I made it home. One day before Christmas. Yes, Lord. I'm so glad. That the Lord, he brought me home. And I began to praise the Lord, oh, in that wine. Is there anybody here that love the Lord? Is there anybody here that believe that the Lord, he'll come to your rescue? He wouldn't have been that hour. He'll come to where you need him. If you lay down.
Down.
Down and believe that the Lord will come to your rescue. Oh, isn't that right? If you know he will, say yeah. If you know he will, say yeah. If you know he will, turn to your neighbor and give them a high five and say yeah. Can you say yeah? Ain't he all right? Ain't the Lord all right? He will, he'll come to your rescue. I'm so glad that I'm preaching tonight. God has given me just one more chance. Ain't that right? That the Lord— yeah, yeah! Say yeah! Say yeah! Say yeah! I'll say He walked with me. He talked with me. I know he's all right. Do you know he's all right? Do you know he's all right? Lift your hand. Say he's all right. Say yeah, yeah, ah yeah.
Woo!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
I can say tonight that God is able.
God is able.
Whatever you're going through, if you seek God, after 12 years, this young lady, she was healed. And whatever you're going through, even in this day, I believe God will make a way.
Look at your neighbor and say, neighbor, whatever you're going through, neighbor, whatever you're going through, I believe that God God will make a way.
Come on, let's give God a handclap of praise.
I know the Lord, he'll make a way. Oh yes, he will. Oh, I know the The Lord, he'll make a way. Oh yes, he will. Yeah. Oh, he picked me up, turned me around, laid my feet on solid ground.
Whoo!
I know the Lord, he'll make a way. Oh yes, he will. Oh, I know the Lord, he'll make a way. Oh yes, he will. Yes, he will. Oh, I know the Lord, he'll make a way. Oh yes, he will. Yeah, he picked me up. Turned me around and planted my feet on solid ground. I know the Lord, he'll make a way. Oh yes, he will. Yes, Lord. Yes, Lord.
Let's give the Lord a handclap of praise. As that young lady, after meeting Jesus, after 12 years she was healed, I've met God.
He's healing me now. I'm still—
he's still working on me, but I thank God tonight for what I went through tonight.
Good God of mercy, and I thank you for praying for me. There may be someone here tonight without without Christ. You don't mind if I just just ask them. There may be someone without Christ. You need a church home. But you you here tonight. Your pastor would ask y'all to come tonight. I you all you all are in the house tonight. I thank God. I thank God for you. Amen. I thank God for you.
Amen.
But if there's one, if there's one, I would like for you to come and give your life to Christ. First Lady, would you come just stand with me? There may be one, because you know she's pastor, she does a lot of things for this church. Just help me ask for somebody that may just— and she'll take you in right now. When I'm seeking those to be saved, I ask my wife, say, honey, will you come on up and stand?
So there just may be one, not a whole lot, just one.
I'm not gonna take a long time, just that one. You come. So I got one finger up. Let's do like this. Raise one finger, one finger. If there's just one, you'd like to come and give your life to Christ.
This church, this church is on the move.
I love what he's doing. I love what his wife is doing.
I love—
this church is on the move for who?
For Christ.
Amen.
Christ. God bless you. Amen. God bless you.
We want to give you a chance tonight to give something tonight.
We're going to give an offering to him. We're going to come if you need a book. If you need one of those, you can come and get it. But I believe we got someone here tonight.
Will you come in a few moments?
And we'll—
