How to Have Joy in Every Season: Rooted Like the Olive Tree

In this solo episode of the Rewired for Purpose podcast, host Rosangela Atte—a certified Christian life and brain coach—explores the nature of true, resilient joy that endures every season of life. She explains that joy is not dependent on circumstances but is rooted in God’s promises, presence, and grace. Atte weaves together biblical insight (Nehemiah 8:10, Psalm 34:18, Romans 8:28, etc.) with neuroscience, showing how gratitude and joy rewire the brain by releasing dopamine and serotonin, lowering cortisol, and strengthening the nervous system. Using the olive‑tree metaphor, she illustrates how pressing seasons—like the crushing of olives—refine believers, producing an “oil of joy” that heals and blesses others. She then offers concrete, neuro‑spiritual practices to cultivate joy: daily gratitude lists, embodied joy movement, scripture meditation, breath‑based resets, serving others, and trusting God’s plans. The episode concludes with a prayer affirming joy as an inheritance and an invitation to her coaching services at theshifthercoaching.com.

Welcome to the Rewired for Purpose podcast, where faith meets neuroscience, healing meets identity, and women rising to the fullness of who God created them to be. This is a place where you will learn how to turn your pain into purpose. I'm your host, Rosangela Atte, certified Christian life and brain coach, prophetic voice, Mentor, wife, mother, grandmother, and a woman on a mission to help you renew your mind, regulate your nervous system, and break free from the lies that have kept you stuck. My heart is to empower you to walk in your God-given identity and discover your purpose. Today we are diving into something so many of us long for, yet sometimes it slips right through our fingers, and that is joy. Not the surface-level, fake-it-till-you-make-it kind of joy, not a fleeting high That disappears when life gets messy. I'm talking about deep, resilient joy, the kind that anchors us in Christ no matter the storm, no matter the pressing season, no matter what the world says. Because here's the truth: joy is not dependent on circumstances, other people's approval, or whether life is going the way we planned. True joy is rooted in God himself. His promises, His presence, and His perfect plans that are working all things together for our good. The Bible doesn't say the joy of our circumstances is our strength. It says the joy of the Lord is our strength in Nehemiah 8:10. That word joy in Hebrew is kedvah, meaning gladness, rejoicing, a celebration birthed from security and trust. In Greek, joy is Kara, a calm delight, a deep inner gladness that flows from grace. Did you hear that? True joy flows from grace, not from what you can produce or control. And here's the beautiful synergy of scripture and science. Joy and gratitude literally rewire your brain. They release dopamine and serotonin, the feel-good chemicals that calm your nervous system. They lower cortisol and improve your heart health. They boost immunity and enhance memory. When you practice gratitude, you meditate on God's goodness and recall his faithfulness. You're not just being spiritual; you are reshaping your brain to align with peace and resilience. Joy is medicine for your soul, healing for your body, and a lifeline for your spirit. Proverbs 17:22 says. A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Isn't it fascinating that modern science now confirms what God told us thousands of years ago? Let's talk about the olive tree. Let's talk about olives because they tell the story of joy in a way we often overlook. The olive tree is one of the most resilient trees on Earth. Its roots go deep into the soil, finding water, Even in the driest droughts. Even when cut down, it sprouts again. The olive is pressed, crushed, beaten, but not destroyed, just refined to release its oil. And this oil isn't just any oil. It anoints, it heals, it illuminates, and it carries blessing. Spiritually, this is a picture of what happens in our lives When we are pressed, when we are going through pressing, stretching seasons, storms, the wilderness, whatever you want to call it, the Gethsemane moments, they are necessary. Gethsemane means oil press. This is the very place where Jesus, fully God and fully man, walked into crushing surrender. Even he, perfect and sinless, had to endure the press. If our Savior had to go through Gethsemane, so will we. These pressing seasons are not punishments. They are purification. They are processing us. They are making us into the new creation God intended us to be, and He is preparing us and equipping us for the next season. These moments, these seasons produce the anointing that flows through us, not just for ourselves, But for others. Think about it. The oil only comes after pressing. The joy, the anointing, the strength only comes when we allow God to press us, refine us, and release his Spirit through our obedience and trust. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. You're never alone in your pressing. And Romans 8:28 assures us that we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him. Who have been called according to His purpose. Everything the enemy meant for evil, God transforms for good. That's why joy is possible even in sorrow. I know it's hard to think or it's hard to believe, but it is. Resurrection always follows crucifixion. Oil always follows pressing, and joy always comes in the morning. So how do we practically cultivate joy even in pressing seasons? We practice gratitude. Write down 3 things every morning that you're grateful for. Not just the big wins, but the little ones too. A breath in your lungs, a sunrise, a simple smile. Gratitude strengthens our joy circuits. Embodied joy exercise. We smile, we move, we dance, we lift our hands. Studies show your brain responds to your body. So worship through movement. Let your body preach joy to your brain. We meditate on scripture. Take one joy verse and chew on it all day, like Psalm 16:11, in your presence there is fullness of joy. John 15:11, I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. Isaiah 61:3, he gives us the oil of joy instead of mourning. Or Habakkuk 3:17-18, Though the fig tree does not bloom, yet it will rejoice in the Lord. Romans 15:13. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him. We can practice a neurospiritual reset when anxiety rises. Pause and breathe. Inhale for 4, hold for 4, and exhale for 6 while we declare: The joy of the Lord is my strength. By doing this, we are calming our vagus nerve and anchoring our spirit simultaneously. We serve others. Joy multiplies when shared. Your oil, your anointing, your joy is never just for you. It flows through you to heal, uplift, and bless others. We trust God's plans. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us his plans are to prosper us, not to harm us, to give us a hope and a future. Even when we don't understand, joy comes from trusting his perfect plan. We remember he is near to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 promises, the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Our joy is not the absence of pain, it is the presence of God in our pain. We believe he turns evil into good, just as Romans 8:28 declares that God works all things together for those who love him. Even the enemy's attacks become raw material for God's glory in your story. We emulate Jesus, Hebrews 12:2 says, for the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God. Jesus endured crushing because he saw the joy beyond it. Our joy too is strengthened when we fix our eyes on eternity. Beloved, the olive tree doesn't escape the heat, the drought, or the pressing. Its roots go deep. It endures the storm and produces oil that blesses and heals. That's you. You may be pressed, but you are not destroyed. You may feel crushed, but you are being refined. The pressing produces your oil, your oil produces joy, and your joy flows into strength, resilience, and blessing. Not just for you, but for everyone around you. The olive tree, like you, stands rooted in life, hope, and promise. Let's pray. Father, I thank you that joy is not something I have to manufacture. It is my inheritance in you. I thank you that even in seasons of pressing, you are near. You are working all things for my good. You are turning mourning into dancing and despair into praise. I declare that the joy of the Lord is my strength. I declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I declare that joy flows from within me like living water. Not because of circumstances, but because of Christ in me, the hope of glory. I declare that I will be like the olive tree— resilient, deeply rooted, fruitful in every season. I declare that the oil produced in my life will anoint, heal, and bless others. In Jesus' mighty name, amen. Thank you for listening to the Rewired for Purpose podcast.
