YOU DON’T HAVE A DISCIPLINE PROBLEM… IT’S AN IDENTITY PROBLEM

In this solo episode of the Rewired for Purpose podcast, certified Christian life‑and‑brain coach Rosangela Atte argues that what many people label a "discipline problem" is actually an "identity problem." She explains that a person’s repeated thoughts, words, and actions stem from deep‑seated beliefs about themselves, others, and God, which are often formed by trauma, rejection, and survival patterns. Rosangela illustrates this principle with biblical case studies—Gideon, Joshua, Esther, and Peter—showing how God’s spoken identity for them preceded and shaped their transformation. She then connects these stories to neuroscience, describing neuroplasticity, the reticular activating system, and the Pygmalion effect as mechanisms by which repeated self‑talk creates neural pathways that become default behavior. The episode emphasizes the importance of intentional repetition (meditation on truth, Philippians 4:8) to rewire the brain, and highlights how a dysregulated nervous system keeps people stuck in survival mode. Practical tools are offered: journal prompts, guided breathing, affirmations, and a prayer that invites listeners to surrender their false identities to God. Rosangela introduces her "Esther Method" coaching program, which focuses on exposing and healing the root wounds, submitting them to the Holy Spirit, and allowing God’s truth to form new neural pathways. The episode ends with a prayer for identity restoration and an invitation to engage with her coaching services at theshiftercoaching.com.

My heart is to empower you to walk in your God-given identity And discover your purpose. Hey friends, welcome back to the podcast. Today I want to talk about something that completely changed the way I understand healing, transformation, and why so many people stay stuck in the same cycle. Because for years I thought I needed more discipline, more willpower, more self-control, more motivation, more faith, pray more. But what I eventually realized through my own healing journey and now through coaching women over and over again is this: you don't have a discipline problem, you have an identity problem. Your life is a reflection of what you repeatedly think, say, do, and allow in your life. But those things don't come from nowhere. They flow from what you believe about yourself, about others, and about God. And most people are living from identities formed by rejection, Abandonment, criticism, shame, trauma, fear, and survival instead of truth. So today we're going to unpack the neuroscience of repetition, how the brain forms patterns, what scripture says about renewing the mind, how identity shapes behavior, and why healing at the root changes everything. Grab your journal and let's get into this. Something I've learned is this: people behave according to who they believe they are, not according to what they desire, not according to what they intellectually know, but according to identity. If someone deep down believes that they're not enough, that people always leave them, that they have to earn love, that they will never change, that belief will eventually shape their thoughts, their emotions, their reactions, their relationships, and their decisions. Let's use some biblical examples. Gideon. Judges 6 says that the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and said, the Lord is with you, mighty man of valor. And Gideon responded, my clan is the weakest. I am the least in my father's house. God spoke identity into Gideon, but Gideon responded from insecurity, from what he believed he was. And this is what happens when wounds shape our identity. We interpret our lives through pain instead of truth. Let's look at Joshua. Joshua is another powerful example. When Moses died, Joshua was stepping into a massive responsibility. And what does God repeatedly tell Joshua? To be strong and courageous. Why was God telling him that? Because courage is impossible when our identity is weak. So God was pulling forth that identity, that belief in Him. He was not just preparing Joshua for the battle, He was strengthening his internal world. And many people want promises, they want the breakthrough, they want the authority, the power without allowing God to heal the mindset required To carry it, to steward it. Esther is another example. She begins as an orphan girl raised by Mordecai, living in a foreign kingdom with a hidden identity and painful, painful beginning. And yet God had placed her for a purpose, you know, before she even understood the weight of that purpose that she carried. Esther did not step into the influence overnight. There was preparation, there was a process, there was a hidden season refining before she stood publicly in authority. And what I love about Esther is that her story shows us that identity often has to be revealed before purpose can be fully walked out. Because when that moment came for Esther to speak, Mordecai told her, yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this? That sentence was not just about assignments. It was about identity. You are queen for such a time as this. God has made you queen for this exact reason. She had to stop seeing herself only through the lens of loss, fear, survival. Her beauty and her obedience— she had to recognize that God had positioned her there for a purpose. And this is what happens in healing. God begins to reveal, you are not just what happened to you. You are not just the orphan girl. You are not just a survival pattern. You are called. You are positioned. You are chosen for such a time as this. Now let's talk about the neuroscience of identity. Our brain is constantly adapting according to repetition. This is called neuroplasticity. Every thought we think fires a neural pathway. And when we repeat that thought, the pathway strengthens. It's like walking on a trail in a forest, and at the beginning it's not very evident, but as you walk it every day back and forth, that trail becomes deeper and deeper and easier to walk. And so that neural pathway becomes the default. That mindset becomes the default. It becomes automatic. This is why repeated thoughts become beliefs. Like, I'm not enough, nothing ever changes, people can't be trusted, our brain literally builds networks around these thoughts, and eventually they become the default. There's something in the brain that is called the reticular activating system. Its job is to filter information. So whatever we repeatedly focus on, our brain starts looking for evidence of it. If you focus on rejection, we notice rejection. If you focus on fear, you notice danger. If you focus on the faithfulness of God, you begin seeing His hand everywhere. And you're not just seeing the reality of your circumstances, you're seeing what your brain has been trained to notice. There's also a psychological principle called the Pygmalion effect. The Pygmalion effect shows that people often rise or fall according to the expectations placed on them. In simple terms, what we repeatedly believe about ourselves influences how we behave, and how people consistently speak to you can shape what you eventually become. If a child grows up constantly hearing, you're difficult, you'll never succeed, you're too much, you're not smart enough, their brain and nervous system begins building identity around those expectations. But the opposite is also true. When someone is consistently spoken to with encouragement, truth, belief, safety, love, just like God was telling Joshua to be strong and courageous, he was calling forth That identity, and he eventually rose to those expectations because the brain begins forming new pathways connected to confidence, possibility, and growth. And honestly, we see this all throughout scripture. God constantly called people according to who they were becoming, not just who they currently appear to be. Like when he called Gideon a mighty warrior before Gideon believed it, and he called Abram Abraham before he became the father of nations. And he called Simon Peter, meaning rock, before Peter became stable. Why? Because heaven speaks to the identity, to the potential in us, and many of us spend years being shaped by words that did not come from God. This is why healing matters so much, because sometimes the voice you hear in your head today started as the voice of someone else. And part of renewing the mind is learning to stop partnering with false labels and begin agreeing with the truth. Of what God says about you. Philippians 4:8 says, finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, lovely, whatever things are of good report, meditate on those things. Meditation is repetition. God was instructing us long before neuroscience discovered neuroplasticity. Here are some journal prompts for you. What thoughts do I repeat most often? What beliefs have been shaping my life? Where did those beliefs come from? Do they align with God's truth? Our words have power. They matter more than we think. The scripture says that death and life are in the power of the tongue, Proverbs 18:21. And Jesus said, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, Matthew 12:34. Our words reveal our beliefs. But they also reinforce them. Every time you repeatedly speak something, you strengthen that pathway neurologically, and that's why constantly saying, I'm broken, I'm anxious, I can't do this, nothing is changing, reinforces those beliefs. And let's be clear, this is not about pretending, okay? Healing requires honesty, but there is a difference between, I feel anxious right now, and, I am an anxious person and this is who I'll always be. One acknowledges the emotion and the other creates our identity. The Israelites left Egypt physically, but mentally they still thought like slaves. And honestly, I find myself there so many times. They constantly agreed with fear instead of God. They still walked in that orphan mentality. And many believers today are saved spiritually but still mentally living from survival. Our nervous system is always asking, am I safe? If your life has been filled with chaos, criticism, rejection, unpredictability, fear, our nervous system may default to survival— fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. And when the nervous system is dysregulated, peace feels unsafe, rest feels uncomfortable, vulnerability feels threatening, and intimacy with God feels dangerous. This is why healing is not just spiritual. God created mind, body, and nervous system— spirit, soul, and body— and healing involves all of it. Put your hand over your heart, take a deep breath, and slowly repeat: I am safe with God. God is with me. I do not have to strive for worth. I belong to him. Take another breath, relax your shoulders, relax your jaw, notice your body. This is not weakness, this is teaching your nervous system safety. Esther is one of the most powerful examples of identity transformation. She began as an orphan and orphan thinking creates insecurity, fear, hypervigilance, self-protection, survival patterns, and people pleasing. But Esther went through preparation, not just external but internal transformation as well. The first 6 months were with oil of myrrh, which was a purification detoxification process. She was scoured, she was deeply massaged, she had to take myrrh orally to get rid of all parasites. And toxins, and she had to take care of all the trauma that lived in her fascia, in her body, in her muscles. And then she went through 6 months of beautification. That's where God began to build her new identity. There was a hidden process before there was a public influence, and many people want the authority without the process, without the healing, without the crushing, the refining. But God cares more about our internal condition than Our external platform. Peter loved Jesus deeply, but he still had fear, impulsivity, and instability. Jesus didn't discard Peter because of these character traits. He transformed him, and after encounter, surrender, and healing, Peter became stable enough to lead. Transformation always follows encounter. These are more journal prompts for you. What identity have I been living from? What wounds shaped that identity? What would change if I truly believed God's truth about me? What patterns keep repeating in my life? You know, you can try to change your thoughts, to fix our habits, or try harder, but if your identity is still wounded, you will keep producing the same fruit. Jesus said, a healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit. Nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. In Matthew 7:18. You don't fix the fruit by taping better fruit onto the branches. We have to heal the root, and that healing happens in His presence because identity is not something we figure out intellectually. It is revealed through relationship, through intimacy with the Father. In His presence, lies are exposed, wounds are healed, Identity is restored and nervous system learns safety. Sisters, let me leave you with this. If you want to change your life, don't just focus on your behavior. Go to the root. Sit with him. Let him reveal who you are. Let him heal what has been shaping you because your identity is in him. Because when he restores your identity, everything else follows. And this is exactly what I teach through my Esther Method and what I go through with my clients, with my coaching. I use the Esther Method. We examine and we expose the roots. We submit them to the Holy Spirit. We take time and trust the Lord with the process. We begin to heal and honor our past and our pain. Then we begin to experience and encounter His love like we never have. As our Father, as a daughter and her Abba, and then we begin walking redeemed and restored in our identity and fulfill our assignments with our Father by our side. Let me pray for you. Heavenly Father, I thank you for every woman listening right now. Lord, you see every hidden wound, every survival pattern, every lie they have carried about themselves, and every place where pain has shaped identity more than truth. And Father, today I ask that Your presence will begin to bring healing at the root, Lord. Reveal the places where they have built their life from rejection instead of acceptance, and from fear instead of trust, from striving instead of sonship. Lord, expose every false identity that has been shaping the way they think, speak, act, and live, God. Every lie that says, I'm not enough, I will never change. I'm too broken. I will always struggle with this. Father, silence the voice of shame and renew their minds with truth, Lord. Your Word says that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. So I pray for new pathways to begin forming. Hallelujah! New patterns, new beliefs, new levels of peace and security, Lord. Teach them, Jesus, to see themselves through Your eyes. Where trauma taught them fear, teach them safety. Where rejection taught them insecurity, teach them belonging. Where survival taught them striving, teach them to rest in your presence. Holy Spirit, heal the roots of every dysfunction that has kept them stuck in cycles that do not reflect who you created them to be, Lord. And Lord, I pray that your truth will become louder than every wound. Jesus, help them guard their thoughts. Help them watch their wounds. Help them become intentional about why they repeatedly focus on, agree, practice, and allow in their life. Jesus, thank you that healing is possible. Hallelujah! Thank you that transformation is possible, God. Thank you that our past does not have to define us, that our past does not have the final word, Lord. And I thank you that identity is restored in your presence. Let every listener begin to walk in the truth of who they are in you, God. They are chosen, they are loved, they are redeemed, accepted, called, and deeply known by you. All of this I ask in Jesus' name. Amen. And friend, if this message resonated with you and you are ready to stop living from survival patterns and finally heal at the root, I would love to walk with you.
