Why Healing Must Come Before Authority | Joseph, Esther, Trauma & Stewarding Power

Rosangela Atte argues that unhealed trauma leaves leaders prone to rage and poor judgment because it keeps the amygdala overactive and the prefrontal cortex offline. She uses Joseph's prison years and Esther's six-month myrrh treatment as examples of God deliberately delaying promotion to allow deep emotional processing before power.

This is the place where you will learn how to turn your pain into purpose. I'm your host, Rosangela Atte, Certified Christian Life and Brain Coach, prophetic voice, mentor, wife, mother, grandmother, and a woman on a mission to help you renew your mind, regulate your nervous system, and break free from the lies that have kept you stuck. My heart is to empower you to walk in your God-given identity and discover Welcome back, friends. Today we're going to talk about something necessary and honestly something that is not discussed enough: why healing must come before authority, why God often delays promotion, why some doors don't open yet, and why some people receive influence too early and self-destruct. Many of us want the crown without the crushing. We want the platform without the process. How many want authority but have never done the work to heal the wounds that would distort our authority? And if trauma remains unhealed, power becomes dangerous. So today we're going into scripture, neuroscience, and prophetic truth through the lives of Joseph and Esther. So what does trauma do to a person? Trauma is not just what happened to you, it's not just the event. Trauma is what happened inside of you because of what happened to you. Trauma shapes our beliefs, our reactions, our nervous system responses, the way we attach to people, our identity, our trust, and our emotional Regulation. From a neuroscience perspective, unresolved trauma can keep the brain in survival mode. That means hypervigilance, suspicion, anger, people-pleasing, emotional numbness, fear of rejection, control tendencies, inability to rest, impulsive reactions, just to name a few. And when our nervous system is dysregulated, our amygdala becomes overactive. That's the brain's alarm center. The prefrontal cortex, which governs wisdom, discernment, empathy, planning, restraint, goes completely offline under chronic stress. So imagine someone with authority, influence, money, followers, leadership power, but their nervous system still lives in threat. That person may control to feel safe, rage when challenged, Sabotage relationships. Seek validation through status. Collapse under pressure. Confuse trauma reactions with discernment. This is why healing is essential and why it matters so much. God does not only care about what you do, he cares about who you become while doing it. Many people ask, why hasn't happened yet for me? Why is God delaying? Why am I being hidden and crushed? Sometimes, I would say most of the times, the answer is mercy. He is protecting us because authority amplifies what is already inside of us. If there is peace inside, then authority multiplies that peace. If there's wisdom, same thing. If there's insecurity, authority multiplies the insecurity. If there is rage, authority multiplies the damage. God loves people too much to hand them over to unhealed leaders. He also loves you too much to give you something that your soul cannot sustain. Take Joseph. Joseph had dreams early, but dreams are not the same as readiness. He was favored, gifted, marked by God, chosen. Yet before he ruled Egypt, he walked through betrayal, Stripping, false accusation, prison, and delay. His brothers attacked his identity first. They stripped the robe, the robe that his father made. Then Potiphar's wife attacked his character and reputation, because that's what the enemy does if he can't get to your identity. If that doesn't work, he will attack your character and your reputation. The prison tested endurance. Imagine Joseph receiving power too early. With unresolved betrayal, he could have punished his brothers. With unhealed rejection, he could have ruled harshly. With bitterness, he could have weaponized authority. Instead, the process changed him. It purified him. So by the time his brothers stood before him, Joseph had enough healing to say, what you meant for evil, God meant for good. That is not Language that a wounded man uses. That is the language that a man that went through refinement uses. Joseph's long process likely built emotional regulation, patience, perspective, restraints, and resilience. Those traits are essential for leadership. God wasn't only raising a ruler, he was healing his soul. Now let's talk about Esther. Esther was an orphan, and that alone carries huge emotional weight— loss, insecurity, grief, identity wounds, fear of abandonment. Yet she was chosen for influence. But notice, she did not go straight into the palace throne room. There was a season of preparation— oil of myrrh, beauty treatments, instruction, timing, and process. But those first 6 months The oil of myrrh was a time of purification. Myrrh was used more as a medicinal oil than a perfuming oil. She had to be scoured, deeply massaged. She took myrrh orally to get purified of all the parasites and the toxins. That was not a spa treatment. The first 6 months were An actual detoxification. It was a purification time. You see, trauma lives in the body, and she had to be free. She had to process all that trauma that still lived in her muscles, in her tissues, in her fascia. So she went through that deep somatic work. Then the second phase, the 6 months of beautification, restored and rebuilt her into the woman she was becoming. This shows us this truth: that before public authority, there is a private formation. She needed courage before confronting the king. She needed identity before carrying a nation's fate. She needed wisdom before using influence. If Esther had still been ruled by fear, she may have hidden. If she was ruled by approval needs, she may have compromised. If she lacked healing, pressure could have broken her. Instead, she rose in courage for such a time as this, because that's what Mordecai said. And I believe that when he used those words, what if you were chosen for such a time as this, he implanted her royal identity in her. Because before that, she did not want to face the king, because if you did uninvited, you would have been killed. But she embodied her identity as queen. She Dressed like a queen, she walked like a queen, and when Mordecai used those words, she realized that maybe I'm not here just because I'm pretty, submissive, and I please the eunuch and the king. Maybe I'm here to save my people, and that's when breakthrough came. She rose in courage. We need to be honest, some people have titles but still need healing, and this can look like Needing constant admiration, punishing disagreement, emotional volatility, manipulation through guilt, inability to apologize, jealousy, envy, burnout from overworking, collapsing privately while performing publicly. This happens in businesses, in churches. Man, does it ever happen in churches. The spirit of manipulation and witchcraft is huge right now in churches. Marriages, parenting, social media, everywhere. A microphone does not equal maturity. Believe me, it does not. Followers do not equal wholeness, and position does not equal peace. Let's ask the Lord, what in me still reacts from pain? Where do I seek control because I feel unsafe? Where am I leading from fear instead of love? Lord, where am I trying to be seen because I don't feel secure? Then we begin healing work: prayer, repentance, renewing beliefs, nervous system regulation, wise counsel, grieving losses, forgiveness, boundaries, receiving God's love consistently. Healing does not mean being weak. Healing is a leadership training. I know that some of you think you are being delayed, but you are just being prepared. The Lord is equipping you through the process. Some of you think that doors are closed, but your soul is being strengthened to carry what is coming. Some of you want the palace, want the authority, you want the pulpit, the stage, but God's still doing holy work in the hidden place. Joseph needed the prison before the government. Esther needed the preparation before the influence, and you may need healing before authority. Not because you are disqualified, because what is coming is weighty and God wants you whole enough to carry it. So don't despise the process, yield to it, because if you do not yield, you will just make the process longer. Your hidden season may be the greatest gift of your life.
