Tested and Refined: The Science of Trusting God | Faith, Neuroscience & Healing from Father Wounds

In this solo podcast episode of Rewired for Purpose, host Rosangela Atte— a certified Christian life‑and‑brain coach—explores how God’s testing and refining of believers is both a spiritual and neurological process. She begins with Abraham’s test on Mount Moriah, unpacking the Hebrew word naka (to test) and showing how Abraham’s obedient sacrifice strengthens his pre‑frontal cortex, silences the amygdala, and builds neural pathways of trust. Rosangela then shares her own story of fatherlessness, her grandmother’s prophetic faith in post‑war Naples, and the family’s risky move to Canada 28 years ago, illustrating how personal wilderness seasons become opportunities for brain‑based rewiring and identity formation. The episode shifts to Joseph, whose Hebrew‑rooted saraf (to refine) illustrates emotional purification; Rosangela links Joseph’s betrayals and prison to limbic‑system neuroplasticity, describing how forgiveness and humility remodel the brain’s fear circuitry. She synthesizes testing (intellectual faith) and refining (heart‑and‑body transformation) as God’s integrated design that makes faith embodied. The teaching concludes with a prayer, an invitation to listeners to join her Shifter Coaching program for women seeking mind renewal, nervous‑system regulation, and purpose‑aligned living, and a call to book a discovery call.

My heart is to empower you to walk in your God-given identity and discover your purpose. Hello everyone, it feels so good to be back home. I have just come back from a 2-week vacation in Italy, and although it was beautiful, we saw family, friends, it was incredible, We had amazing weather, but I couldn't wait to get back to my home, my children, my grandson, and to my routine. It's really hard for me to be consistent with my time with the Lord when I travel. It just doesn't feel the same. And although I try, it is really hard because we are always running around. So, Being here today with my mic, my Bible, my computer, and you guys just feels so good. It's really my happy place, and I came back a little bit sick, so I want to apologize for my raspy voice. Today we're going to go deep into a subject that every believer walks through— being tested and refined by God. We'll look at what scripture reveals about Abraham and Joseph, the neuroscience behind why God allows pressure to purify us, And I'll share a piece of my personal story, a time when God called my husband and me to leave everything we knew behind and start fresh in a new country, Canada, with no safety net but His Word. Because here's the truth: you can't trust a God you don't know, and you can't truly know Him until you walked with Him through both the testing and the refining. Let's begin with Abraham, the father of faith. Genesis 22:1 says, after these things God tested Abraham. The word tested comes from the Hebrew naka, meaning to test, to prove, to try, to examine what's already there. This was not the test of a novice believer. This was the test of a friend of God. Abraham had already walked with the Lord through decades of promises, waiting, Mistakes and mercy. He knew God's voice. He had seen God's faithfulness again and again. So when God asked him to sacrifice Isaac, the son of the promise, Abraham didn't argue. He didn't delay. He rose early in the morning and went. Now listen to the words he spoke to his servants, words that reveal his maturity and his understanding of God's character. He said, stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship, and we will come again to you. Abraham called obedience an act of worship. He trusted that God's nature was good, even when his instruction was hard. That's the kind of trust that only comes from history with God. Now let's bring the neuroscience in, because your faith journey is also your brain's journey to rewiring. When Abraham chose to obey God rather than give in to fear, something powerful was happening in his brain. His prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for reasoning, decision-making, and trust, was being strengthened. Every act of obedience literally reinforces new neural pathways of faith and safety. Think of it this way: each time you choose to trust God over fear, your brain learns that obedience leads to peace, not punishment. That's how you build spiritual and neurological resilience. Testing seasons train your brain to stay calm under divine pressure. They silence the amygdala, that fear center that screams, you're not safe, and replace it with a deeper truth: God is for me and I can trust him. He is good and he has the best on his heart for me. This is how faith becomes embodied. It's not just a belief in your head. It becomes a state in your body. You embody it. You know Know that you know that you know that God has good plans for you, just as Jeremiah 29:11 says. Trusting God has always been part of my spiritual DNA, but not because life made it easy. My story began with pain. My father left my pregnant mother and me when I was just a baby. We lived with my maternal grandparents in Naples, Italy. My grandmother Adriana, or Adriana, what a woman of faith she was. She was a true pioneer of the Christian faith in Naples during the '40s. She came to Christ after someone gifted her a Bible, so she began to read it, and the Holy Spirit himself revealed Jesus to her. From that moment, she became a different person. Her life became a living revival. She was radically transformed. So I grew up watching miracles unfold before my eyes— miracles of financial provision, miracle of sick people being healed, people getting new organs, people being delivered by demons. I could— I was in a room with my sisters and my cousins because we were not allowed to be present when the deliverances were happening. So I remember hearing people throwing up, people rolling around, people speaking in tongues. It was something that was very common in my home. I remember people encountering Jesus and giving their life to Jesus, crying in repentance as my grandmother was sharing the Gospel with them. She was a prophetic evangelist. She was a powerful woman of God, and I always, always aspired to be like her. I have the gift of faith as well as she did. In fact, my middle name is Fede, which means faith in Italian. And when I asked the Lord, God, what is my spiritual name? Because, you know, the Lord changes every time He upgrades us. There's so many examples in the Bible. He changes our names. So I asked God, God, what is my name? And He said, you've had yours since birth. I'm like, what do you mean? And then He reminded me that my middle name is Fede. Faith. So I know that I am wearing her mantle of faith. She carried the gift of faith so tangibly that believing God could do something was never the hard part for me. What was hard for me was a deeper battle. It was the question that whispered, would He do it for me? That question was the residue of fatherlessness. Growing up feeling unworthy, unseen, unloved, like so many of us, I unconsciously projected the image of my earthly Father, onto God. The enemy, you know, kept whispering to me that if my earthly father could leave, surely my Heavenly Father could too, right? I knew in my head that God was good, but my heart still wrestled with the shame, the guilt, and the self-condemnation. I struggled with feeling of unworthiness, with believing that I had to earn His love or prove my value. So God, in His mercy, took me on a long wilderness journey. Not to punish me, but to heal me. In that wilderness, He rewired me from the inside out. He taught me to lean on Him for everything, to depend on His voice, to receive love rather than perform for it. That's where I learned who I really am and whose I am. That's where I discovered that He is not like the one who left. He is the perfect Father, steadfast and kind, whose love never fails. And then came the moment that tested everything I had learned. Our call to move to Canada. 28 years ago, the Lord called us to come to Canada. We had no money, no guarantees, no job offers, nothing. But when God said, go, we didn't hesitate. It doesn't mean it wasn't hard. I mean, our families were here, everything we knew. We were just about to embark on a great adventure, but we had so many hopes and so many dreams that we were just excited, a little bit scared, but mostly excited. That faith that had been nurtured through generations, that faith that I had seen in my grandmother, now had to become my own faith. Leaving everything behind was terrifying in the natural, but my spirit knew His voice. That move was our Mount Moriah moment. It was God saying, will you trust Me without evidence? And we did. We chose to believe Him above the fear. In the years since, I can tell you These past 28 years, He has never failed us. He has provided in miraculous ways, and one day I will share some of the testimonies, and we are actually going to write a book about all these testimonies. You know, it shaped our family, it strengthened our marriage, and established our purpose. What started as a leap of faith became a legacy of faith. Now let's look at Joseph. Psalm 105:18-19 say, His feet were hurt with fetters. His neck was put in a collar of iron until what he had said came to pass. The word of the Lord tested him. The Hebrew word here for tested, saraf, means to refine, to purify like metal in fire. While Abraham's tests proved what was already formed inside of him, Joseph's refining process transformed what still needed to be healed on the inside of him. Joseph had the calling but not yet the character to carry it. He had dreams but still some pride, resentment, and unhealed wounds from rejection and betrayal. So God allowed the furnace of life to refine him until his heart mirrored the humility of Christ. The refining process doesn't destroy you. It purges you of what can't go with you into the next. From a neuroscience perspective, refining is a process of rewiring the emotional brain. It's what happens when God invites us into emotional healing and sanctification. Refining touches the limbic system where your emotions, memories, and trauma responses live. Joseph's betrayals, false accusations, and isolation weren't just external trials. They were internal rewiring moments. God was healing the amygdala's memory of fear and betrayal, teaching Joseph's nervous system that he could still feel peace even in prison. This is where neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to change and heal, mirrors God's sanctification process. Every time Joseph chose forgiveness over bitterness, humility over pride, faith over despair, he was forming new neural Pathway patterns. He was being refined, purified, not only spiritually but neurologically. That's why the refining fire feels so intense. Your body is letting go of old emotional memories and learning to rest in God's safety. So where testing trains your mind to trust, refining trains your heart and body to rest. Both are essential for transformation. When we combine these 2 Revelations, Abraham's testing and Joseph's refining, we see God's perfect design. He doesn't just test our faith intellectually, he integrates it into our biology. Faith is not abstract, it's embodied. When you obey God, your brain and nervous system are literally being rewired for peace, trust, and resilience. So when you find yourself in a wilderness season, or when you feel that The heat of the fire is too strong. Don't despair. You're not being punished. You are being prepared for greater things. The potter's hands are steady. The goldsmith knows the exact temperature needed to bring forth the shine. And your Father, our Lord, knows the process that will bring forth his image in us. The wilderness is never wasted. The testing of your faith and the refining of your soul are both divine invitations. To know God more intimately. Abraham's test led to a deeper revelation of God's provision. Joseph's refining led to a deeper revelation of God's redemption. Both came out of the other side saying, now I know you. And that's what God desires— to be known. Because the more you know him, his character, his faithfulness, his ways, the easier it becomes to trust him completely. And when you trust him completely, you can surrender without fear. And that's the fear of the Lord— not terror, but awe-filled confidence that your Father is good and that his plans for you are perfect. So, dear listener, maybe right now you're in your own season of fire. Maybe you feel like Joseph— misunderstood, confined, waiting for the dream to come to pass. Or maybe you're in an Abraham season, being asked to surrender something precious. Wherever you are, hear this: you are not being broken down, you are being built up. You're not being abandoned, you're being refined. You are not being punished, you're being prepared. Yield to the process. Stay on the altar because the moment of elevation always follows the fire. The same God who tested Abraham and refined Joseph is forming Christ. In you. Let's pray. Father, thank you for every listener walking through a testing of refining season. Thank you for the fire that doesn't destroy but purifies. Strengthen their faith like Abraham's and refine their hearts like Joseph's. Rewire their minds, their bodies, their souls for peace, trust, and obedience. Remind them that you are faithful and that every trial has a purpose, Lord. Amen. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
