“Your Obedience Is Turning Your Enemies Into Bread” | Christian Life & Brain Coaching | Numbers 14:9

In this solo episode of the Rewired for Purpose podcast, host Rosangela Atte, a certified Christian life‑and‑brain coach, explores the biblical phrase from Numbers 13‑14 where Joshua says, “Do not fear them, for they are bread for us.” She argues that when believers obey God, the very things that threaten them become nourishment. The teaching weaves together scriptural examples (Joshua, Moses, Joseph, Esther, David, Paul, and Jesus) with neuroscience, explaining how a sense of safety—rooted in a correct image of God—regulates the vagus nerve, steadies heart rate, and quiets the mind, making obedience feel natural rather than burdensome. Atte guides listeners through a breathing exercise, a visualization of Jesus offering a table of bread while giants (fear, shame, betrayal) linger at a distance, and a series of journal prompts and daily obedience challenges designed to rewire the nervous system and reinforce identity in Christ. The episode concludes with a personal invitation to her coaching services at theshiftercoaching.com, encouraging listeners to pursue purpose, healing, and freedom through obedient, love‑based action.

Welcome back to the Rewired for Purpose podcast, where faith meets neuroscience, healing meets identity, and women rise into the fullness of who God created them to be. This is a place where you learn how to turn your pain into purpose. I'm your host, Rosangela Atte, certified Christian life and brain coach, prophetic voice, mentor, wife, mother, grandmother, and a woman on a mission to help you renew your mind, Regulate your nervous system, and break free from the lies that have kept you stuck. My heart is to empower you to walk in your God-given identity and discover your purpose. Today we're diving into a revelation the Holy Spirit gave me out of Numbers chapters 13 and 14, specifically the line where Joshua says, do not fear them, for they are bread for us. It was an unusual statement, but the more I sat with it, the more the Lord began revealing this pattern all throughout scripture. What comes against you becomes nourishment for you when you obey God. Today we're going to break that open from scripture, from neuroscience, and from the lens of identity, because obedience isn't just about following rules. It's about knowing who God is, knowing who we are, and understanding that your nervous system responds differently when you feel safe in His love. So grab your journal, grab your coffee, a warm blanket, whatever makes you feel safe and settled. We're going to go deep today. Let's begin in Numbers 13 and 14. God promises Israel the land of Canaan. It's a beautiful, fruitful, abundant land. But the people are giants, and suddenly the promise doesn't look possible anymore. 10 spies focus on the fear, on the obstacles, while 2, Joshua and Caleb, focus on what God said. And Joshua said something really strange: Do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. And this part of the passage just stuck with me. And the Holy Spirit would not let me move forward, and the Lord kept revealing to me what this actually meant. The Hebrew word for bread is lechem— nourishment, sustenance, something that strengthens you. Joshua was saying, the very things that terrify you will become the things God uses to strengthen you. And you know what? The same pattern appears in Moses. Joseph, Esther and Mordecai, David and Goliath, Paul in prison, and ultimately Jesus at the cross. Every story reveals the same truth: the enemy becomes your bread when you obey. Let's connect this with neuroscience for a moment because this is where so many believers struggle. Your brain obeys what it believes it's safest. If your image of God is harsh, unpredictable, or or distant, your nervous system will resist obedience even when your spirit wants to obey, because the brain is wired to avoid anything that feels unsafe. But when we know who God is and that he loves us and that he wants the best for us, our body relaxes. The vagus nerve comes down, the heart rate stabilizes, the muscles soften, the breathing becomes deeper, And our mind becomes clearer. Safety brings surrender, and identity brings obedience. When we know and understand that our Father loves us, that he would never do anything to hurt us, that he is for us, he's with us, and he will not fail us, the nervous system stops bracing, the mind stops catastrophizing, And the body stops tightening. The inner child stops panicking because it feels safe knowing that the Father has our back. Obedience becomes possible and almost a reflex, a natural action, because we're no longer fighting the fear. When you have history with God, obedience becomes natural. You know, Jesus kept saying, fear not. Not as a command to behave not fearful, but as an invitation to come into safety, because a regulated nervous system obeys with joy. You cannot obey consistently until you know who you are in God. When you don't know your identity, obedience feels like pressure. It feels unsafe. It feels like a burden. Oh, it's overwhelming. But when we know we are loved, chosen, protected, When we know that God delights in us, that we are His daughters before anything else, the entire inner landscape changes. Obedience will flow from our identity and courage will flow from belonging. There will be a flow of boldness because our attachment is to a Father who is safe, who is constant, who is always there. Like Joshua said, if the Lord delights in us, He will bring us into the land. The light is the doorway of obedience. Let's take a moment to regulate our nervous system so that our bodies can hear God clearly. Inhale gently for 4 seconds, exhale slowly for 6. Do this 5 times. This extends the exhale, which signals safety to the brain, and it relaxes the vagus nerve. As you breathe, whisper, Father, I am safe. I know I am loved, and I know I am yours. Close your eyes if you can. Imagine yourself walking into a beautiful room. There's a long wooden table set with bread, oil, wine, everything you need, and Jesus is standing there waiting for you. He's not disappointed in you. He's not impatient. He's smiling. He's warm. He's welcoming. He pulls out a chair for you. He invites you to sit down. And sitting all around the room, in the shadows, at a distance, are the things you feared: shame, rejection, failure, betrayal, insecurity, past wounds, all those giants. But none of them can come near the table. Jesus looks at you and says, sit. Eat, let me nourish you. What once threatened you will now feed you. Wow! Stay in that moment for a few breaths. Feel that peace in your body. Feel the safety that Jesus's proximity is bringing to your nervous system. Knowing that He's there changes everything. We feel Protected. We feel safe. We feel favored. We feel like nothing can touch us. Take time with these journal prompts later if you can. Where have I been obeying God from fear instead of love? What feels like a giant in my life right now? Do I truly believe that God delights in me? How does my body respond when I think about obedience? What enemy has actually strengthened me without me realizing it? Also ask these questions: Lord, show me where obedience feels scary and why. Where have you already turned my enemies into bread for me? What do you want me to obey you in right now? What promise have I been too afraid to step into? This week, practice choosing one small act of obedience each day. Not huge, just something simple that aligns your heart with God's. For example, send that text, say yes to the assignment, release the resentment, open the Bible before opening your phone, lay down the thing he's nudging you about. Because every act, even the smallest one, rewires your nervous system. Every yes builds confidence, and every moment of surrender strengthens our identity. Obedience becomes our nourishment. We grow, and the giants become bread, and the land that God promised us becomes accessible. You see, even Moses was nourished literally and saved by his enemies. He was raised into the best family could have been raised in, in the royal household, fed the best food, given the best education, military training. He was actually prepared by his own enemies to be the one who liberated his people and then destroyed the Egyptian army. Isn't that incredible? Only God can do that. Same with Haman. And Mordecai, Haman was preparing the gallows for Mordecai, and just as he went into the king to say what he had done, the king turned it around and said, I want you to honor Mordecai for saving my life. And then Haman ended up dying the same way he wanted Mordecai to die. God has always flipped the script at the last moment. And if we obey, if we stay If we don't let fear take over us, but we rest in knowing who we are and who God is to us, God will turn that enemy into our bread. And those places of trauma, places of pain, will be turned into the very place that God will use to propel us, to accelerate us. To elevate us. Daughter of God, you're not fighting for victory, you're walking from it. And as you obey Him, not out of fear but out of love, your enemies will become your bread, your obstacles will become nourishment, and the very places where you felt small will become the ground where you will rise. I'm so proud of you, and I'm honored to walk with you, and I can't wait to hear what God does in your life. Through this revelation. Thanks again for listening to the Rewired for Purpose podcast.
