Ryan Maloney breaks down drawing a head in 60 seconds using three shapes: a circle for the skull, a mask for the face, and a sphere for the neck. He shows where to place the midline, eyes, jaw, and ears to build a foundation you can customize with different noses and eyes.

60-second drawing tutorial: Drawing Heads. When you're drawing heads, think about there being 3 shapes: a circle, a mask, and a sphere for the neck. Here I'm sliding them all together to show you the shape of the head. I'll erase these lines so you can see it a little bit better. To get these shapes, draw a circle and pick the direction the head is looking in. Draw a midline and an eye line. On the side of the head, draw a little circle. This is going to give you a guide to get your jawline. Then follow the other side of the circle down to finish your jawline. Now draw your necklines down from these two points. I continue the midline down the circle and put an ear at these two points. This isn't a full detailed tutorial, but it'll start to turn your drawings from doodles to something with a little bit of structure and make them much more recognizable. Once you have the structure in place, then you can play with different nose shapes, different eye shapes, or you can break these rules altogether. Give it a try, let me know what you think.
