Ryan Maloney directed Owl City's "Unbelievable" video after Universal gave him complete creative freedom. Stuck in a Chicago hotel boardroom looping the song, he landed on a 1990s VHS-tape concept inspired by "Be Kind Rewind" stickers from the video-rental era.

Here's how I created the Owl City Unbelievable music video. When Universal asked me to make the music video, they said I could have free rein on the idea behind the video. Personally, I like the pressure in knowing that a lot of people are counting on me and they're a little bit worried that there are no ideas on the table. I love starting with a blank page, but for some reason the weight of this project felt a little bit different, and I found myself getting creatively blocked for the first time in my life. I couldn't think of any good ideas. I traveled to Chicago for a wedding and spent a full day in the boardroom in the business center of a hotel repeating this song over and over. And then it finally clicked. The song was about nostalgia, specifically a '90s era. And what better to represent that era than a VHS tape? Once I had the character, I knew I had to figure out a clever way to end the video. Thinking back to the video rental era, I remembered the "Be Kind Rewind" sticker on VHS tapes. From there, the ideas flowed.
