Self-published books sold on Amazon need two labels: an ISBN on the back cover and an Amazon FNSKU for each copy. Ryan Maloney prints the ISBN on the book and applies the FNSKU label to a plastic bag instead, avoiding the hassle of printing directly on inventory.

Barcodes for books, part 2. If you're self-publishing your book on kdp.amazon.com, they give you an ISBN number and you put it on the back of your cover and you really don't need to worry about it from that point on. But if you are producing your own books and you're going to be selling them on Amazon, you're going to need 2 labels. The ISBN label that goes on your book and you can have the price baked in or not. This example has the price there and the price there. I've chosen not to add the price to my label. This is my first time selling on Amazon outside of KDP, so finding information on this second label was pretty tough, but here's what I'm going with. Amazon needs what's called an FNSKU label on each product, but I really didn't want to print that label onto the book. So this is what my final setup will be. ISBN label gets printed on the book with or without the price. Each book will be wrapped in a plastic bag, and on that bag will be the FNSKU label.
