In this behind‑the‑scenes walkthrough, Ryan Maloney explains how he creates a "breaking board" animation. He first draws two versions of a board—an intact one and a broken one—on separate Procreate layers. He records his hand moving the Apple Pencil over the iPad, then drops the iPad to capture the motion. The footage is transferred to a computer and imported into Adobe After Effects, where he uses the Keylight plugin to key out the green background from the video. After keying, he adds a solid background and places the two board drawings as a multi‑frame Photoshop file (three frames total). By timing the Photoshop layers, the board appears to break precisely when the pen contacts the iPad, completing the visual effect.
