Ryan Maloney designs a minimal street-art character for Buffalo branding by sketching geometric shapes and an arrow mouth, then vectorizing it in Illustrator with the Pen tool. He keeps it simple to avoid overcomplicating, adds color, and asks for feedback on uses like helmets and apparel.

Buffalo needs a street art character, something simple that could go on helmets or clothing. So I started whipping up a few sketches and I started to latch on to this simple shape. Usually I overcomplicate my drawings and projects and absolutely everything, so I want to keep this as simple as possible. Basic shapes, an arrow for the mouth, sort of like a football arrow in playbook. Let's airdrop it over to my computer and start building it in Illustrator. I started to build it with simple shapes, but I realized I'm going to have to do this by hand and trace it with the pen tool. I curve the path around the entire drawing until it looks complete. I can even shift things around at this point. Start to add some color. I think we're just about done. Of course, I'm never satisfied, but let me know what you think. Is— am I just fooling myself here? There's the helmet, maybe some graphics, some clothing.
