Ryan Maloney shows how to animate a surf wave for a music video without drawing every frame. He sketched the wave in Procreate, used After Effects' Motion Tile effect to loop it, added particles and a cylinder effect, then placed a surfer on top. The whole thing took a fraction of the time frame-by-frame animation would have.

I'm animating a surf scene for a music video. I was going to draw the wave frame by frame, but it seemed like a ton of work. You can see I started to do it here in Procreate. Then I accidentally drew this. So I imported it into After Effects, added Motion Tile to create a seamless moving loop, set the output height to 200, added some position keyframes, Added some bubbles on the end with a little bit of wiggle, then added CC Cylinder to that comp. Now I have the appearance of a 2D animated wave. I can add in my surfer, and I saved myself a bunch of time.
