Ryan Maloney started with a picture book called The Night My Bed Turned Into a Spaceship in 2015, but his sister-in-law said it was unreadable. He scrapped it and turned the idea into a 400-plus-page graphic novel prequel about a submarine instead, with a spaceship sequel planned after.

First versions of anything you create are pretty bad. I'm used to it. You should get used to it too. This is where I originally got the idea for The Night My Bed Turned Into a Submarine. It started off as The Night My Bed Turned Into a Spaceship, a picture book, but it really wasn't working. My sister-in-law told me it was, quote, unreadable. I think she said that. I might be making that up. That's getting me in trouble. I drew this in 2015 or so. I had no idea what I was doing. I still don't. But what I thought is that this didn't work as a picture book, so I'm going to try it as a graphic novel. Because artists and creatives, we complicate things and we like to torture ourselves. I said, I'm going to make it the sequel. Wait, is that right? No, it's the prequel. This is what it looks like now. This is The Night My Bed Turned into a Submarine. It takes place before The Night My Bed Turned into a Spaceship. This is Till, the main character, before in the picture book. This is Till after. This is the graphic novel. If anybody in the comments says the before looks better, it's, it's going to break my heart. And we're sticking with this. This is a 400+ page book. We're going to, we're going to stick with this character style. And spoiler alert, submarine graphic novel is going to end with the spaceship. Then I have to draw another 400-page book.
