Ryan Maloney started and stopped his book Ice Cream Robots about twenty times because he was chasing money instead of meaning. The character Mad Vlad, a strict ice cream scooper from New York, came first, but he had no real story. Moving to the suburbs and losing his clients forced him to abandon commercial ambitions and write from his own life instead.

I had some major problems writing this book. I must have started and stopped writing it about 20 times. It's because I was writing it for the wrong reasons. I had this idea for Mad Vlad, a strict ice cream scooper based on a real-life character in New York City. I had the name Ice Cream Robots, but I didn't know what to do with it. It wasn't until I was moving and changing up my business, leaving New York City for the burbs, having to leave all my clients behind, the hustle and bustle of New York City, and sort of go through the process of reinventing my business. I was also getting a few gray hairs. It wasn't until I let go of the delusional commercial goals that I had for this book and started writing my own story into it that I felt like this book was worth making. Having delusional goals about everyone loving your work is a great way to get started and motivate you, but it's not until you let all of those go and write your own story into it that you'll be proud of it.
