Here's how I wrote and self-published my picture book Pancake Pennsylvania. My son was eating a lot of pancakes, and I thought to myself, he could eat a stack of pancakes a mile high. So I started to work on a book about a mile-high stack of pancakes, but it went nowhere. Then I got this line in my head: pictures of pancakes were posted on Pinterest. I grew up in a town where people were obsessed with Buffalo Bills football. Some people even had pieces of turf on their shelf from games that they won. So I thought people would put pancakes on their shelves as souvenirs. Then I started to think about what the town would be like that was obsessed with pancakes. Would there be a president? President Prescott. Then the idea of the alliteration fell into place. I would use as many words with P as possible. I illustrated the book in Clipart Studio, assembled it in InDesign, and uploaded it to kdp.amazon.com. Now every time I sell one, it's printed on demand perfectly.
