Ryan Maloney conceived The Day Gravity Goes Loco on a subway ride from Times Square to 96th Street in New York City. The book's central image came to him as he left the train: a train slipping off its tracks and soaring into the sky.

I was on the train in New York City when I wrote this book. I had a crazy 2 weeks and I was exhausted. I sat back on the train as it took me from Times Square to 96th Street and I said, "This is loco." I just imagined things floating around like I couldn't even keep my feet on the ground, things were so chaotic. And when I got off the train at 96th Street, these words popped in my head. Today I saw with my own 2 eyes a train off its tracks flying in the sky. And that's what became The Day Gravity Goes Loco.
