Ryan Maloney starts with a single image: a character on a treadmill chasing money. He sketches it in pencil, then polls his audience on whether to ink it in black-and-white or full color. The vote went overwhelmingly for color, so he's testing Posca pens and planning a complete colored piece.

I'll usually start with one idea, like I just started drawing this guy on a treadmill chasing a bag of money, and then I'll let the story build out from there. I'll try not to think about it as much as possible. It's sort of hard to see the details because I'm only in the pencil phase right now. I posted a poll to see if I should just make this all black and white inks or if I should color these. Pretty unanimous vote that everybody wants to see this in full color, which is going to be a lot of work. I did some tests with Posca pens to see what the line work's going to look like, but I'm gonna have to redo that because I'm going to put some color on here. Everyone voted to fully color and ink this thing, so that's what I'm gonna do.
