Ryan Maloney pitched his book The Day Gravity Goes Loco to traditional publishers and got three to four rejection letters. He decided to stop waiting for permission and publish independently instead, arguing that artists should make work for the love of it, not for external validation.

When you tried to publish your book, did you get any rejection letters?
I did. I made The Day Gravity Goes Loco, so I figured I'd pitch it to a publisher, and it got rejected 3 or 4 times. After I got those rejection notes, I just thought to myself, why am I asking for other people's permission to make these stories? I think the future is being independent and creating because you like to create and not waiting for anybody's permission to create something.
