Ryan Maloney sketches an alien character named Jay for his graphic novel using Procreate's Crunchy Cow Pen. He draws the character from multiple angles to build a model sheet, then inks and colors it. The focus is speed and exploration over polish, to lock the character in his mind before writing.

Next character up from Book Whiz is Jay in my new graphic novel. Starting on a blank canvas in Procreate using Crunchy Cow Pen, just doing rough sketches. Typically alien eyes would be these big buggy eyes, but I'm going to add some human pupils in there to add some more life. I started with the 3/4 pose and now I'm going to the front pose. I'll also do a side and a back pose. Then I do cleaned up ink lines on top of this layer. Not trying to be perfect. I just want to see a sketch so I have the character in my head when I'm writing. Now I'm going to drop and tap in colors, add some highlights and shadows, and we're good to go.
