Ryan Maloney teaches two exercises to improve hand drawing: blind contour (drawing without looking at the paper) and regular contour (looking back and forth). Do four timed sketches with each method at 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes to build observational skills and hand-eye coordination.

How to get better at drawing hands. I'm going to show you 2 drawing exercises in this video. The first drawing exercise is a blind contour drawing. This is where you're looking at only your hand and you're drawing it on the paper without looking at the paper. Create 4 drawings, one for 10 seconds, one for 1 minute, one for 5 minutes, and one for 10 minutes. Then on a new sheet of paper, do a contour drawing. This is where you're looking at your hand and you're looking at the drawing on the paper at the same time to to make it a much more accurate drawing. Again, make 4 drawings, one for 10 seconds, one for 1 minute, one for 5 minutes, and one for 10 minutes. Practicing with these 8 drawings will help you understand the lines and the shapes of the hand.
