Ryan Maloney complains about After Effects: sharing projects requires collecting hundreds of linked files, extensions don't transfer between versions, and there's no built-in commenting. He introduces Fable.app, a cloud-based alternative with collaboration tools built in, as a faster option for motion design.

I have some beef with After Effects. Every time I have to share a file with somebody, I need to do this whole dependency collect files thing. Oh, I'm going to send this to somebody and there's going to be linked files to Google Drive and they're gonna have to link, or I'm gonna have to link, 516 files. You get messages like this just randomly in the middle of very important projects. Don't get me started on extensions and scripts having to transfer them over with every new version. They just be built in and there is no collaboration whatsoever. My clients, why can't they just drop notes on this video timeline right here? Why do I have to render this video, put it up on Frame.io, or send a Google link by email? Ooh, started to dabble with Fable.app. Not sponsored, just a fan of the product. This is like After Effects in the cloud. Figma meets After Effects. It's extremely intuitive. If you know After Effects, within 5 seconds of opening I almost called it Figma. Fable. You're going to know how to use it and you're going to start to question what are you doing with After Effects? Like, I'm still using it, but like, do I need to be using it?
