Ryan Maloney does a premortem before every project: imagine it failing in six months, list why, then build systems to prevent each failure. Pair pessimism with the belief you can overcome anything.

Here's why I always do a premortem before every single creative project. A premortem is just a way of thinking about all of the things and hurdles that can come your way when you're launching a project. Let's say in 6 months from now your project was a complete failure. List out all the things that you can think of as to why that project failed. That's your premortem. This is a completely pessimistic way to move forward, so you balance that out with extreme optimism that no matter what happens, you're gonna get over that hurdle or build systems to get around it. When you're launching a new project, everybody's extremely happy, everything's perfect, it's gonna take over the world, it's the best idea ever. But having just that attitude and not being ready for the punches in the face, it's gonna make you fail pretty quickly. Expect the hurdles, expect the setbacks, expect the valleys of despair. Make it a game, try to predict those hurdles, and when they come about, it's gonna be sort of fun for you thinking that, ah, you predicted that and you can get around it.
