Ryan Maloney spent three years stuck on his novel Ice Cream Robot until he stopped hiding and let his own pain into the story. When he wrote honestly about what hurt, the work came alive. Holding back keeps a story dead.

Sometimes stories will just flow out in full form. Sometimes I'll have to fight through it. I'll have an idea like Ice Cream Robot, a book that took me like 3 years to write about like an angry ice cream man. And I'm like, where am I going with this? The expression is like, let your pain sing. Until I put myself into that and write about what I'm really going through, then the book comes alive and then I finish it very easily. But when I can't finish a book, I know I'm holding back and not saying what I really want to say.
