In this YouTube video, Ryan Maloney presents his new children's book series centered on Toby the Turtle, a turtle born without a shell. He explains the core premise: Toby feels sad about his lack of a shell and experiments with a variety of improvised shells—such as an airplane, a pillow, a squirrel, and more—creating a whimsical, make‑believe adventure. The story incorporates a choose‑your‑own ending where young readers guess which makeshift shell Toby ultimately selects, encouraging engagement and imagination. Ryan also mentions that the series will consist of multiple collectible books, each featuring different shell ideas, and expresses pride in the back‑cover description. The video includes a brief, informal walkthrough of the book pages, with a note about a backward‑facing camera.

Chapters

All right, so let's meet Toby the Turtle. He was born without a shell. That's why the name is— it's backwards, but it's a— let it— it's turtle without a shell. Sorry for the backwards camera, I gotta figure that out. So Toby is pretty sad that he was born without a shell, so he tries all these different things to try to be cool and fit in, like, and, uh, creates a different shell for himself, a bunch of different shells. Um, and I'm skipping a bunch of pages and giving away the ending here. But it's sort of a choose-your-own ending for kids. So Toby tries an airplane, a pillow, all these things, a squirrel. And then at the end, if I can land on the page perfectly, let's see if I can get to it. Let's see if I can get to it. What do you think Toby chose to use for a shell? And then kids will guess. And then that's the, that's the story, really. I won't give away the ending. I'm pretty proud of the description that I wrote of it on the back. And then there's a bunch of them to collect.
