Ryan Maloney shows his three favorite Procreate brushes for character design. He raises the Studio Pen's streamline for smoother lines, uses the Technical Pen when rushing despite occasional color bleed, and configures the Calligraphy monoline to 1% size for consistent 1-pixel lines like Shel Silverstein's drawings.

These are my 3 favorite pens in Procreate. First up, Studio Pen. I use this for lines with varying width. I'll turn up streamline a little bit in the settings, and it's pretty reliable when I drop colors into the closed shapes. Next up, Technical Pen. To be honest, I can't really tell you the difference between the Studio Pen and the Technical Pen. I just use this when I'm in a rush. Sometimes when I drop colors into the shapes, they will bleed out and fill the entire canvas. Next up is my go-to for really thin lines, the monoline found in Calligraphy. I set the brush behavior size in the properties to 1% maximum and 1% minimum. Sorry for the dust on my iPad. This brush is the complete opposite of the Studio Pen. It's going to give you a 1-pixel line no matter how hard you push. I don't know why I love this pen. I love doing these little dots and then drawing the line like Shel Silverstein.
