Ryan Maloney colors monster illustrations in Procreate by duplicating the ink layer and applying color underneath, letting him adjust palettes freely without affecting the line art. He uses the drag-and-drop color picker to choose eye colors and character palettes efficiently.

This is the work in progress of the big stack of monsters I'm currently coloring in. I got it all inked, starting to drop in their eye color, figuring out what color these characters are going to be. You can just drag and drop colors. When I color, I duplicate the ink layer and then add the color to the layer below it. That way, when I drag and drop colors or color in the layer below it, I can go in and clean up and make sure there's no space between the ink and the color.
