In this short monologue, Ryan Maloney outlines the concept for a picture‑book series in which each protagonist is born lacking a defining attribute—a turtle without a shell, a witch without a broom, a cloud without a float, etc. The characters attempt to compensate by trying on various objects or behaviors to fit in with others, often facing mockery. Ultimately, each character chooses to embrace their original state, finding happiness in being themselves. The series is framed around themes of belonging, identity, and self‑acceptance, using whimsical, relatable examples to convey the message to a young audience.

Without a being the word that ties the whole series of books together. Book without a cover, turtle without a shell, squirrel without a tail, fish without a bowl. These characters were born without something and they try to be like the other things. A witch tries to have a broom, a cloud tries to have a float, and all the other characters make fun of them for not having that thing. Each one of the characters try different things and be like the other characters. Toby the turtle tries a lampshade, and they try all these different things to fit in, but then at the end, each one of the characters chooses nothing, and they're pretty happy just the way they were.
