In this tutorial Ryan Maloney explains the two essential PDF files needed to publish a book on Amazon KDP: a cover PDF and an interior PDF. He describes how KDP provides sizing templates, using a 6" x 9" graphic novel as an example. The cover PDF must include the front cover, spine (integrated into the template), and back cover with the ISBN. The interior PDF contains all the interior pages; for his book this means a 432‑page PDF. Ryan emphasizes following the template dimensions and applying the correct bleed (approximately 0.0125 inches) when setting up files in InDesign. He also notes that after uploading, KDP’s preview and quality‑check panel will list any errors that must be fixed before the book can be approved and listed for sale.

Let's talk files you have to upload to kdp.amazon or amazon.kdp. I always say there are two files that you need. You need a cover file in a PDF and you need an interior file in a PDF. KDP will give you sizing templates. You can download this for my graphic novel. It's 6 inches by 9 inches and this entire cover right here is one PDF file. So I have the front of the book here, I have the spine which is built into the template and built into the COVID And then I have the backside with ISBN, ISBN number that I mentioned in the previous video. The interior file is going to be everything that's on the inside of your book. So my book is 432 pages. My interior PDF file is 432 pages. So these are two files that you're going to upload. Follow the template for the sizing and make sure you get the correct bleed right. I set all of my files up in InDesign. So this is 6 inches by 9 inches, and then there's a bleed around the outside. I forget the exact amount, maybe like 0.0125 inches. And then you're going to be able to preview and go through your book on Amazon. It will list all of the errors in this quality check panel here that you're going to need to fix before you can— your book is approved and listed for sale.
