Ryan Maloney argues that every creator's real job is generating wow, whether you're a designer, writer, or dentist. He says newcomers get distracted by skill-building or personal satisfaction, but the only metric that matters is making people say wow. His own work splits 80% client projects and 20% building IP, but everything aims at the same thing.

I think all creators are trying to do one thing, and when you're first starting off as a creator, you can get lost in developing your skills and think it's all about you. But what I think most creators are trying to do, and what I'm trying to do, is create the sense of wow. Like, anything you create is a wow. In my creative services business, it's a wow. If I'm writing and illustrating, whatever I'm creating, it's a wow. If you're a dentist, it's a wow. A doctor, a wow. If you don't hit the wow, you're doing it all wrong. You're, you're doing it for yourself. You should get high on the wow. You should chase the wow. Amazon is all about the wow. Creators can look a little scatterbrained, focusing on a lot of different things. I spend 80% of my time working with clients in design and animation and 20% writing books, coming up with characters, creating IP. And to a lot of people I talk to, they think that you need to focus on one thing, but I am focusing on one thing: the wow.
