Ryan Maloney shows how replacing a square corner with a curved line that wraps around a head adds shape and character to a sketch. A small change in how you draw transforms a flat line drawing into something with volume and realism.

I'm not the biggest stickler for details, but when it comes to drawing, when you take the time to think about the lines that you're making, a little bit goes a long way. So here I have a hat connecting to a head, but instead of just doing a square corner, envision that hat, that hat wrapping around the head. It's just this little extra detail. It gives the shape, it gives the character a little bit more volume. And it makes these lines look a little bit more realistic when, you know, this is just lines on paper that is forming some alligator.
