Ryan Maloney based his story on a stern ice-cream scooper he watched on his New York block, who became the character Mad Vlad. After moving away, he imagined Vlad reinventing his business, flying home to scoop ice cream for cows and rebuild his audience. Personal details from real life can spark plot and character development when you're stuck writing.

This is how I wrote Ice Cream Robots. I lived in New York City and there was an ice cream shop on my block with a very serious ice cream scooper. He looked mean and mad. I always thought I'd put him in a story but didn't know how at the time. But then when I moved out of New York City, I felt like I had to change my entire business. So I thought to myself, what if Mad Vlad had to change his entire business? Well, he'd probably fly back home and scoop ice cream to cows. He'd dream of the way things used to be, and the locals would tell him he was really good at his job. And he would probably get old and gray. So Mad Vlad would have to reinvent his business. He wouldn't give up. He'd get back on his feet. He'd change up the rules that were holding him back. And he'd build a new audience and a new business. Ice Cream Robots is only partially about an ice cream scooper. If you're stuck writing a story, try adding your personal experiences in and see what happens.
