Ryan Maloney describes writing Pancake, Pennsylvania, a story about a town obsessed with pancakes for every meal. He built the whole book around the letter P, using it to represent pancakes and other elements, and tied it to his own hometown's passion for the Buffalo Bills to make it personal.

At the peak of the Poconos, there was a peculiar place called Pancake, Pennsylvania. And as you might ponder, the people of Pancake were wrapped in pancake mania. Pancakes were packed on for breakfast bites, but what was preferred for dinner at night? Well, if you guessed it, then you picked right. People pigged out on pancakes at night. When I first started writing this book, I thought it was about a mile-high stack of pancakes. Terrible idea. So the idea sat in the back of my brain for months. Then the first line popped into my head: "A bunch of P's." Could I put P's throughout the entire book? P's for pancakes, P's for everything? Could there be a town completely obsessed with pancakes? The idea started to come together, but it wasn't until I made it personal that the story really worked for me. It's actually a nod to my hometown and their obsession with Buffalo Bills football.
