Ryan Maloney draws illustrated book spines in Procreate, starting with yellow for shelf visibility, then switching to red because yellow felt unsettling. He experiments with calligraphy lines layered over the colored backgrounds to see how they interact.

I started here with this yellow theme. I also like to do color themes in my books as often as I can, so when they sit on shelves, you can clearly see the difference between books. But this yellow started to bother me and I started to think, well, maybe it's more of a panic color, like a red color, and I don't have a red book yet. I started to throw this red in there as the spine color, and I'm also experimenting with using calligraphy lines over top of my colors.
