Ryan Maloney photographs a hand-drawn sketch, lowers its opacity, and inks it in Procreate using the Studio Pen at 17% weight. He varies stroke thickness by position, then fills closed shapes with color and adds shadows on separate layers.

I'm going to turn this sketch into a digital drawing. First thing you do is take a photo of it in Procreate and tap the layer with two fingers. Turn down the opacity. I'm going to use the Studio Pen with a middle weight, 17%. Then I'm going to create a new layer and ink the lines with a varying line width. Usually I do thicker lines on the bottom, thinner lines on the top of the object. Once you have your lines drawn, duplicate the layer, set the top layer to reference, then drag and drop your colors into the shape. Add shadows to a top layer, add some background colors, and you're good to go.
