Ryan Maloney usually waits until several chapters are done to design his book cover, but once he made it after just the first chapter and added it to his template. Having that visual anchor gave him fresh energy, clarified the direction, and helped him finish more chapters faster.

When I'm writing and illustrating a book, I always wait to design the COVID until I'm a few chapters in. I got impatient and decided to design the COVID and add it to my Pages template after only being done with one chapter. But I find once you design the COVID and you have it in place with the story, it gives you a new energy and reminds me of the direction you want to take your book in. Now I can push forward a few more chapters.
