Ryan Maloney compares art school to a guidebook that teaches individual skills, not how to assemble them into a working career. Colleges mainly offer networking and a credential, a "fancy logo" for your work. The rest is up to you.
Is art school worth it? I figured since I'm one of the geezers on TikTok, I have to give this advice. I went back to my old school this weekend and I thought about it. Was art school worth it? Would have been much cooler if I caught that pass. Anything you're consuming, any course, any class, anything to build a skill, those are just guidebooks. Colleges will give you guidebooks, but it's like giving you a guidebook for a piece of a car. It's up to you to build that piece of the car. And after you've learned to build each piece of the car, it's time for you to go out in the real world and put those pieces together and make the car go somewhere. Colleges will help you build your network to take that car further and also give you a fancy logo to slap on the vehicle.
