Ryan Maloney started writing picture books at 30 when his kids read them to him. Rhymes came naturally, and he self-published Turtle Without a Shell despite doubts about the illustrations. Early sales and reader feedback kept him going.

When did you find interest in writing books? I was 30 years old, 7 years ago. So when I had kids and I started reading them picture books, I would wake up the next day and these rhymes would be in my head. I made Turtle Without a Shell, was one of my first books, and I didn't have any confidence in it. I thought the drawings were bad. I thought the story didn't work, but I just told myself, I'm just going to make it, finish it, and put it up online. And then people started to buy it, so I started to make more. And it's still a struggle to this day, but I just keep on going. I like to hear people's reactions from what I create.
