Ryan Maloney sketches ideas for his graphic novel sequel, The Night My Bed Turned into a Spaceship, adding a squirrel character and new neighbor while shifting the setting from submarine to spaceship. He transfers solid ideas to a script, avoids space clichés, and plans to simplify character details like finger counts to speed up drawing.

Today I'm starting work on a follow-up to my first graphic novel called The Night My Bed Turned into a Submarine. This is gonna be The Night My Bed Turned into a Spaceship. The first thing I do is usually just pull out a roll of paper and start dumping ideas onto this paper and start thinking about the cast that's gonna be in the story. I'm gonna expand a little bit on the cast from the first book, throw in a squirrel, a new neighbor, and start thinking about what's gonna happen in space that isn't too cliché. In the last story, Till built a submarine out of his bed. So this story, they're going to build a spaceship out of his bunk bed. This is just the first initial brain dump that I do on paper. Once an idea seems like it's pretty solid, I'll put it into a script or into a notepad so I don't lose it and don't forget it. Right here, I'm going through details and making things simple because in my first book I made too many fingers. It just took too long to draw. So I'm going to spend extra time simplifying things.
