Ryan Maloney ordered a test hardcover of his graphic novel through Amazon KDP and was shocked by its weight (five pounds) and $50 price tag. After two years drawing and five years planning, holding the physical book motivated him to finish, even though it still needs character details and more pages.

I think I broke Amazon KDP, or at least I made them sweat. When I heard they were doing hardcover on-demand copies, I decided to send my in-progress graphic novel to be test printed. I thought they would tell me it couldn't be done, but this thing is amazing. I can do bicep curls with it. It's about 5 pounds— maybe not 5 pounds, but you're gonna laugh that I paid $50 to have this printed. I know it can never sell for that, but I just wanted to see what my book looked like in hardcover form. I couldn't wait. I still have a ton of work to do on it, like fill in a lot of these character details and blank pages. After drawing this for 2 years and thinking about for about 5 years. Seeing the book in real life is a little treat that just keeps me going and drives me to the finish line.
